Homer Flora Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Charter Funeral Home on Mar. 24, 2026.
Homer Boyd Flora "Bud", age 87, graduated to heaven, in the comfort of his own home on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born and educated in Clayton, Missouri and later attended Washington University- St. Louis.

He achieved the rank of sergeant in the Army's 82 nd Airborne at Fort Bragg , earning the parachutist badge, while training his fellow soldiers.

After his service, Bud worked in marketing for General Foods, moving up in his career to eventually becoming publisher of both Progressive Farmer and Southern Living Magazines. During his years of traveling with Southern Living, he was assigned to the Olympics in Norway and Spain to research potential ideas to use in the Southern Living – sponsored 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

His background made him an excellent choice to be president/chair of the South East Tourism Society, earning the "Shining Example" award and dozens of tributes from southern states.

Bud's passion for the Lord was exhibited in his terms as 2-time chair of Transformation Ministries Board, Elder chair for 1st Christian Church and an Elder at Covenant Heirs International. It was a joy for him to start, teach, and attend several Bible studies. Being with his family was his favorite private time, which could also revolve around golf, boating, hunting, and traveling.

This very special man loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and always made sure everyone he knew would have an opportunity to know Him.

Words like brave, loving, kind, generous, godly, true friend, faithful, strong, honest, loyal, and intelligent are only a few that could describe the heart and character of Bud Flora.

He is preceded by a son, Jeffrey Flora; a daughter, Sherri LaBeau; a son-in-law Christopher LaBeau; and six siblings. Bud is survived by his loving wife, Georgia Flora; children, Sandra Visconti (Matthew), Gregory Flora (Lisa), Brian Marshall (Chuchi); grandchildren, Crystal Beavers (Brian), Gina Goldman (Michael), Kayla Vo, Stephanie LaBeau, Samantha LaBeau, Brandon Flora, Matthew Visconti, Victoria Visconti (John), Nicholas Visconti, Samantha Perkins, Katrina Perkins; and 8 great granddaughters.

Bud will be laid to rest in the Alabama National Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held for Bud on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the "Rotunda" at American Village located at 3727 Highway 119 Montevallo, Al 35115 from 3-6 p.m. with remarks being from 4-4:30 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to Transformation Ministries at 5120 Cyrus Circle Birmingham 35242.
