Richard Mizell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Charter Funeral Home on Mar. 16, 2026.
Richard Wayne Mizell, Jr, a cherished husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, and uncle passed away on March 13th, 2026 at the age of 57. He was born on June 9th 1968, in Murray, Kentucky. He loved his family, friends, and his work family.

Richard was a hard worker. He enjoyed his time in Boy Scouts of America in his youth and loved to tell the stories of his camping excursions. He played football in high school in Louisiana and at Pelham High School where he graduated in 1986. He received his bachelor's degree from University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1991. He enjoyed going to the Blazer basketball games.

He graduated from Cumberland School of Law in 1995 and was a member of the Alabama Bar Association.

Richard enjoyed cooking, grilling, and music. His favorite hobby was to fix or build anything. He was known to always "have a tool for that". He was also willing to come help anyone with any project. He enjoyed watching science fiction shows and historical documentaries. He also enjoyed watching his sons' and grandson play any sport, soccer, Alabama football, and Kentucky Wildcat basketball. He loved his family immensely. He loved their vacations and spending time together. He especially loved his wife of 32 years, Amy. They enjoyed doing life together.

Upon his passing, he was reunited with his grandparents, James T. Jones (Alberta) and Richard Mizell (Esther), his brother-in-law, Randy Hooten, and his in-laws, Hiram Hooten (Linda).

Richard will always be remembered for his strength, hard work, ability to know and do anything, his laugh, and his love for his family and friends.

Richard is survived by his wife Amy Mizell, his children; Andrew Mizell (Samantha), Noah Mizell, and Eric Mizell. He adored his 2 grandsons, Thomas and Lucas. He also leaves behind his parents: Wayne and Sherry Mizell, his brother James Mizell (Sally) and sisters; Charisse Junk (Mark) and Christine Brashier (Billy). He also leaves his bonus brothers, Nick Hooten (Nikki), Nathan Hooten (Darbe), and Mark Hooten (Christy); and a wealth of other relatives including his nephews and nieces.

He will be remembered for his incredible strength, his deep love for his family, his kindness and his knowledge of everything. We will honor his memory and his passion to keep living Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. with a visitation at 1:00 p.m. at Charter Funeral Home. Rest peacefully, Richard, without pain. You will be deeply missed, loved forever, and never forgotten. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society for Colon Cancer Research.
