Homer Verseman of Crystal Lake, passed away peacefully and into Heaven on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at the blessed age of 94. He was born on June 7, 1931 in Farrar, Missouri to Fred and Mary (Lorenz) Verseman. Homer was baptized, confirmed, and married at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar, Missouri. He also attended grade school at Salem Lutheran Day School, and received his GED High School Diploma from Crystal Lake Community High School. After his marriage to Ruth Mangels, also of Farrar, Missouri, Ruth and Homer moved to Crystal Lake, Illinois.
Homer was the local “Culligan Man” in Crystal Lake for 42 years, retiring in 1996. Homer was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he held various offices and served on different boards and committees. He was active in the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, PADS, and Faith in Action. He was also active in Crystal Lake’s Little League and Babe Ruth League, and a past member of the Harvard Sportsmen’s Club, McHenry Sportsmen's Club, and the Crystal Lake Snow Tigers Snowmobile Club. Homer was an avid outdoors person. He loved to golf, hunt, fish, tend to his extensive vegetable garden, and took pride in the house and yard he shared with his wife, Ruth. He also saved some time to take on new challenges, such as skydiving for his 80th birthday.
Homer was the most kind, humble, and generous man known to his beloved family, countless friends, and numerous co-workers, clients, and customers. Homer’s long life was made possible, and was improved, with a vast supportive family of older and younger members and school children of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School.
Homer is survived by his and Ruth’s three children and following generations – Steve (Barb) Verseman, Scott Verseman, and Susan (Stuart) Klein; grandchildren Jotham (Mairen) Klein and Hanna Klein; and great grandchild Imogen Klein. He was a Step Grandfather to Elizabeth Tobin Withers, Brian (Rory) Tobin, and Bobby (Kendall) Tobin and a Step Great Grandfather to Luke, Max, and Alexandria Withers and Barron, Riley, Blisk, and Musial Tobin. His surviving sibling – Jeanie Verseman Mueller lives in Perryville, Missouri. Homer was preceded in death by Ruth, his beloved wife of 58 years; his parents; his siblings and their spouses, Hildegard (Vernon) Lohmann, Dorothy (Oscar) Koenig, Vera (Bill) Schulte, and Milton (Lois) Verseman; his in-laws and their spouses, Alfred (Irene) Mangels, Arnold (Velma) Mangels, Walter (Elda) Mangels; Norma (Wilbert) Versemann, Wilma (Kurt) Meinz; Reinhold (Elaine) Mangels, and Alice (Ollie) Bachmann, Ralph Mueller; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 3 at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Avenue (Route 176), Crystal Lake. The visitation will continue Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 Pathway Court, Crystal Lake. The Rev. Larry Tieman will officiate. Burial will follow at Windridge Cemetery in Cary.
Homer will be missed and remembered by many people who were touched by his love for them. He entered Heaven with the Good Lord declaring “Well done good and faithful servant.” In lieu of flowers, Homer asked that any memorials be made in his honor at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 300 Pathway Court, Crystal Lake, Illinois, 60014.
