Horace Edmund Ebanks was born on April 4, 1937, in the town of Lodge, St. Ann, Jamaica, the second of six children born to the late Vincent and Ivy Ebanks. At the young age of ten, Horace stepped into the role of man of the house after the untimely passing of his father. He lovingly helped care for his mother and sisters, learning to sew, comb their hair, and cookskills that reflected his deep sense of responsibility and compassion.
Horace received his early education at Above Rocks Elementary School and Lime Hall Elementary School in St. Ann. He later moved to Kingston to begin an apprenticeship with an electrical engineering company before returning to Lime Hall, where he worked for Hunter Brothers, a refrigeration company. He later joined Reynolds Bauxite Mines and played a significant role in Jamaicas transition from 30-cycle to 50-cycle electricitya milestone achievement for the island.
In 1957, Horace met the love of his life, Dorrett, during one of her school breaks. They were married on September 5, 1959, at Beechamville Methodist Church. Their union was blessed with three children: Sharon, Jacqueline, and Neil.
In 1967, Horace and Dorrett migrated to New York, where he was employed by Allen Stevens, a die-casting company, and later by Pashelinsky. Determined to continue his education, he attended the RCA Institute and the Academy of Aeronautics, where he earned an Associate Degree in Occupational Studies.
In 1979, weary of the New York winters, Horace and Dorrett moved to Altamonte Springs, Florida. There, he worked for Page Avjet before opening his own auto maintenance business, Engine Specialties. A man of many talents and interests, Horace earned his private pilots license and fulfilled his dream of owning a plane, which he used to fly back to his beloved Jamaica on several occasions.
Horace had a passion for engines of all kindscars, motorcycles, boatsand spent countless hours in his garage rebuilding and fine-tuning them. He also loved fishing and cherished the opportunity in recent years to visit his nephew in Alaska and fish in the state's pristine waters.
Horace was baptized on June 11, 2016, at Patmos Seventh-Day Adventist Church. At the time of his passing, he was a faithful member and Deacon of Spring Meadows SDA Church in Sanford, Florida.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Dorrett; children Michael (Marjorie) Taylor, Sharon (Ned) Hodge, Jacqueline Ebanks, Lucia (Elton) Bates, Neil Ebanks, and Stephen (Ashley) Nosworthy; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; four sisters Clover, Beverley, Evet and Mitzy; numerous nieces and nephews; and a close friend and neighbor, Ali. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia.
Horace will be remembered for his strength, his generosity, and his unwavering love for family, faith, and community. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
