Howard Bennett

Howard Bennett, 60, of Maple Shade, passed away on February 5, 2026, while serving as a firefighter for the City of Camden.

He wasn’t just a firefighter, he was a true veteran of this job. Howard carried a level of knowledge you don’t learn from a book. He learned it from years of hard work, dedication, and love for this profession. He mentored countless younger firefighters, always willing to teach, always willing to help, and always willing to step in without being asked. When it came to Fire Boat 1, his knowledge and command were second to none. He treated that boat like an extension of himself, and he took immense pride in making sure it — and the crew — were always ready. Howard’s legacy lives on in the firefighters he trained, the standards he set, and the brotherhood he strengthened.

He was many things to many people: a firefighter of 26 years, a husband, a father, a protector, a teammate, a brother, and a friend. But to his family, he was simply Howard — a steady presence whose love and care made life feel safer just by being there.

A skilled carpenter and patient teacher, Howard enjoyed sharing what he knew, especially with his children, nieces, and nephews, who fondly called his guidance “life skills by Uncle Howard.” To those who knew him, there was nothing he couldn’t do. He was a true MacGyver: a man of few words, but innumerable talents. Despite his reserved nature, he never missed an opportunity to rile up family and friends, quietly enjoying the chaos he started. His humor, kindness, and support will be remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Fran; his children, David and Jenna; and his siblings: Craig (Cathy), Janet (James) Tyson, Roger (Anna), Bruce (Susana), Robert (Carmella), Wendy (Timothy) McCardle, and Sally Giunta. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Darlene Bennett.

Family and friends are invited to a private viewing Wednesday February 11 at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion at 11:00 am followed by a public Celebration of Life service at 12:30pm.
