Howard Maxton Byrd, a devoted husband, father, and brother, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, at the Randolph Hospice House. He was 88 years old.

Born on June 12, 1937, in Randolph County, Maxton was a cherished member of his community throughout his life. Maxton was a graduate of Seagrove High School and was known as a hard worker. He was a "jack of all trades", working a variety of different jobs such as Acme McCrary, EC Callicutt, Auman Brother's Feed and Seed, Guilford Dairy, Randolph County Sheriffs Department, First National Bank, and Amick's Repair. Maxton was a big bluegrass fan and enjoyed emceeing the Fiddler's Convention. He was a lifelong member of the Union Grove Christian Church and was known for his steadfast faith and unwavering commitment to his family and friends. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents, Howard A. Byrd and Ivey Leona Brown Byrd, as well as his brother, C.E. "Shorty" Byrd.

Maxton is survived by his beloved wife, Shelby Bunting Byrd; his son, Keith Byrd of Asheboro; his brothers, Darrell "Bill" Byrd and Hilton "Pete" Byrd, both of Asheboro; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Sharon Agner Johnson of Asheboro; step-sons, Bobby Agner II and Gary Agner, both of Asheboro; eight step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, January 3, 2025 at Union Grove Christian Church, 3985 Old NC Hwy 13, Asheboro, with Pastors Gary Reeder, Scott Kidd, and Jacob Clapp officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00 until 1:45 pm prior to the service at Union Grove. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery.
