Howard Calmes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Warren F. Toler Funeral Home on Dec. 9, 2025.
Howard Calmes, a devoted father, grandfather, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Kentucky, just days shy of his 100th birthday. He was born on December 14, 1925, in Estill County, Kentucky, to the late William Bruce and Fannie Mae Martin Calmes.
A man of deep and abiding faith, Howard was a devout Christian whose life reflected his love for the Lord and his heart for service. He was a charter member of River Drive Christian Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon, elder, and later as an honored elder emeritus. Howard stepped in wherever there was a need, believing wholeheartedly that serving and witnessing to others was his life's calling. His dedication extended to the Irvine Health and Rehabilitation Center, where he ministered every Sunday, praying with residents and serving communion. His compassion and steadfast service touched countless lives.
Howard proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Awarded an honorary high school diploma from Irvine High School during World War II, he enlisted in 1946 and served aboard the USS Albany as a Second Class Seaman. The values of duty, honor, and perseverance learned during his service guided him throughout his life.
Prior to enlisting in the Navy, in 1945, he began a long and distinguished career with the L & N Railroad. Starting as a Switchman, he rose to Yard Foreman, retiring in 1985 after 40 years of dedicated service. He also worked alongside his father at Calmes Grocery, and after his father's passing, continued supporting the family business with his stepmother, Hazel Cornett Calmes until he owned and operated the business himself.
On October 17, 1948, Howard married the love of his life, Anna Virginia Wiseman. Their marriage was a testament to devotion, partnership, and faith. They celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to Virginia's passing. They built a loving home and raised their three daughters, Judith, Sarah, and Jane with strong Christian values that continue to live on through generations.
Howard was also a proud member of the Irvine Masonic Lodge, where he maintained active membership for more than 70 years. His commitment to the Masonic principles of fellowship and service was evident in the way he lived each day.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his brothers Harold and Herman Calmes, his twin sister Juanita Thomas, his wife Virginia, and his daughter Sarah Estes.
He is survived by his daughters Judith (Tracy) Adams and Jane Pendergrass (Randall Swain) and son-in-law Garry Estes. He also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren-Bryan (Lisa) Adams, Shaun Adams, Julie (Brent) Raider, Alissa (Kenny) Bell, Whitney (Jamie) Bingham, and Peyton (Dalton) Leet-as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will carry forward his legacy of love, faith, and service.
Visitation will be held at River Drive Christian Church on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 6:00–9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the church on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., with Bro. Tim Jones officiating. Howard will be laid to rest with his family at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Care Plus, Richmond, Kentucky and the River Drive Christian Church.
Howard lived a life of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and heartfelt service. Though he will be dearly missed, his legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Pallbearers: Bryan Adams, Shaun Adams, Slade Freeman, Kenny Bell, Lawson Adams, Brent Raider, Jamie Bingham, Dalton Leet
Honorary Pallbearers: Men of the River Drive Christian Church, Members of the Irvine Masonic Lodge 137 F&AM
