Howard Chan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Funeral Home - Fanwood on Feb. 12, 2026.
Howard Chan, of Fanwood, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and close friends.

Howard was born in Fuzhou, China, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 12. He grew up in New York City's Chinatown and later graduated from the University at Buffalo with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to build a successful 30-year career in information technology.

Howard was a lifelong learner who enjoyed figuring things out on his own. Resourceful by nature, he often watched videos to teach himself new skills. In his free time, he enjoyed working on projects around the house and in the garden. Howard had an adventurous spirit and loved staying active. He enjoyed playing tennis, badminton, ping-pong, and pickleball. In the winter, he could often be found skiing in the Poconos or Vermont, and in warmer months, hiking local trails. For many years, he devoted his Saturdays to teaching children how to play ping-pong and badminton at the Murray Hill Chinese School. Above all, however, his greatest joy was his family.

He loved traveling the world with his wife and daughters, from relaxing on the beaches of Punta Cana to exploring European cities. He enjoyed road trips and camping filled with charades, laughter, and roasted marshmallows over an open fire. Howard delighted in sharing jokes and creating lasting memories with those he loved.

He treasured each day, and even after his diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer in January 2020, he continued to stay active and do what he loved. He fought bravely for over six years, all while continuing to travel, spend quality time with his family, devote time to helping his parents, and do everything he could to maintain his physical strength and mobility until the very end.

Howard will be remembered for his determination, strength, and wit. Though he was a man of few words, he had a gentle smile, a kind heart, and was always ready to listen and offer thoughtful advice.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 25 years, Janice Li, and their beloved daughters, Alexa and Helena. He is also survived by his father, Kam Li Chan; mother, Sui Yam Chan; brother, David Chan; sister, Corinna Chan; and extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Memorial Funeral Home in Fanwood on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

An open visitation with the family will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
