Derek Deo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Funeral Home - Fanwood on Feb. 4, 2026.
Derek Deo, age 55, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of a family and community that meant everything to him. He lived a life defined by warmth, connection, and an extraordinary ability to make everyone he met feel seen.

Derek was the beloved son of Judith and late Dominick Deo. He is survived by his devoted mother; his loving sisters, Suzan and Kimberley; his brothers-in-law Scott and Matthew; his cherished nieces, Brooke and Ashley; his nephews, Dylan and Brayden; and many cousins and extended family members whom he truly adored.

Derek graduated from Arthur L Johnson Regional High School in Clark in 1993. After graduation, he transitioned to Inroads to Opportunities in Roselle, where he spent many happy and fulfilling years working alongside close friends he formed lasting bonds with. Those friendships were a source of great pride and joy in his life.

An accomplished and dedicated Scout, Derek was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout, which reflected his perseverance, commitment, and positive spirit. He was also deeply involved in the Special Olympics for many years, participating in swimming, basketball, bowling, and much more - activities that brought him both confidence and camaraderie.

Derek treasured time spent with his family, especially summers in Long Beach Island, where he loved playing miniature golf, relaxing on the beach, and simply being together with family. He especially enjoyed shopping trips with his mom, where his favorite part was not the shopping itself, but the people - chatting with store employees, greeting passersby, and making connections wherever he went.

Above all else, Derek loved people. He had a remarkable gift for engagement, kindness, and genuine interest in everyone he met. His smile, conversations, and open heart left a lasting impression on countless lives.

Derek will be remembered for his joy, his friendships, his devotion to family, and the love he so freely gave. His legacy lives on in the many hearts he touched and the happiness he shared every day of his life.

Visitation for close friends and family will be held on Monday, February 9th, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. at Fanwood Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood NJ. A Mass will be celebrated following the visitation at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1571 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains NJ. Entombment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Truly a terrible loss for our family. Derek was always a shining light and a warrior.
Always asking questions always wanting to learn. Times like this we all have our regrets of the time we didn´t spend with our extended families but we let our lives get in the way. I will always treasure the times we did have together. Derek may you be greeted at heavens gates by your Dad and your treasured grand parents. Rest In Eternal Peace

I very sorry to read of the loss of Derek. I was lucky to have wrestled for Derek's Dad at SPFHS (Class of 1971) and remember when Coach married Judith and the birth of Derek. Coach Deo was an important part of my earlier life in Scotch Plains.

I was sorry to hear of your passing, Derek. I didn´t know you well, but always did enjoy the brief moments that I spent with you. You always had a smile for everyone you met, and a great sense of humor. Rest well with your dad and grandparents. You´ll always be remembered by those who loved you.
