Howard Dickman Obituary

Howard Neaman Dickman
1/2/1950 - 10/5/2023
Howard "Howie" Dickman passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 5th, 2023 due to end-stage congestive heart failure. He was born and raised in a close-knit Jewish community in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA where the door to his home was always open. He grew up surrounded by extended family and lifelong friends. He completed a PhD in psychology and practiced as a therapist, caring for many patients using American Sign Language. In 1980, he and his wife, Linda, made Saint Paul, MN home where they raised three beloved children. For many years, he was a regular at the St. Paul JCC, both on the basketball court and in the workout room. Howie was known for delivering memorable speeches, finding connections between people (which usually somehow led back to "the J"), and his uncanny ability to secure unique opportunities for his kids and grandkids. He loved to pick up bread from Breadsmith and Cecil's and deliver it to his family twice a week. He enjoyed socializing and was always eager to strike up a conversation. Howie was an avid sports fan, and was a season ticket holder of the Minnesota Timberwolves since their inaugural game. He learned to appreciate Minnesota sports, although it was never in doubt who he'd be rooting for when the Steelers played the Vikings. Whenever possible, he'd eat Mineo's pizza and cheer on the Steel Curtain. He was a fixture at family events and attended all games played by his grandchildren. Howie was a medical marvel who was physically active and working despite significant heart disease for decades. He was preceded in death by father and mother, Joseph and Miriam Dickman; and lifelong friend, Jeff Hadburg. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 49 years, Linda Marini Dickman; daughter, Emily (James) Benzie; daughter, Maddie (Toby) Muse; son, Jonathan (Maggie) Dickman; grandchildren, Owen and Warren Muse and Joseph and Rachel Dickman; and dear Pittsburgh family Richie Isaacson, Marc Oklin, Benjy Relis, Barry Landay, and Jane Hadburg. Also survived by brothers, Shepsie and David Dickman; sister, Sandy Cohen; aunt, Shirley Light; many loving cousins, extended family, and friends.
Howie's funeral service will be held on MONDAY, October, 9th, at 11:00am at HODROFF-EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 671 Snelling Ave S, St. Paul. Funeral also on zoom at: www.hodroffs.com/HowardDickman

He gave me my life back. He was a wonderful therapist who helped me through the darkness and to see joy and happiness again. I will never forget him and words are not enough but I wanted those who love him to know. Debra Casaw
