Howard William Knapp, a man of humor, adventure, and courage, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on November 12, 2025, at the age of 89 at HMH Bayshore Medical Center, in Holmdel, New Jersey. Howard was born on December 17, 1935, in Rahway, New Jersey. He was raised in Rahway and graduated from Rahway High School in 1954. He then pursued a career as an Electrician in the Navy. Howard was hardworking and industrious. He loved his family and country deeply.
Howard's memory is carried by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard Cooper and Margaret (Wilkins) Knapp, his sister Marion (Knapp) Reeves, his cherished son, Kenneth H. Knapp, and the loving mother of his children, Claudia Marie Poolet Knapp. His memory will be forever cherished by his children, Susan L. Baranek of Joliet, Montana, Stephen A. Knapp of Roselle Park, New Jersey, and Audrey M. King and her husband Eric of Landenberg, Pennsylvania. Howard's grandchildren, Cynthia J. Baranek, Kenneth H. Knapp Jr., Alexandra N. Knapp, Alivia R. Howard served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1954-1958 during the Korean war. He was trained as an electrician while assigned to the U.S.S Mischer. As a dedicated seaman, he was the main scuba diver to dive off the Destroyer DL2 and was nicknamed "Snapper" for always catching the biggest fish. His commitment to his naval duties was recognized when he was invited to attend Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training to become a Navy Seal. Howard, however, chose to decline this prestigious invitation to marry and start a family. He lived in Roselle Park, New Jersey for many years.
After his service, Howard built a career as a skilled electrician and foreman for Anheuser-Busch Co. in Newark, New Jersey. His work ethics and expertise were well respected, and he retired after 38 years.
Howard's passion for the ocean was unparalleled. An avid fisherman, scuba diver, and boater, he found solace and joy in the waves and beneath the sea. He won many fishing competitions, including catching a 44-pound codfish off the coast of Rhode Island. His love for recreation and sporting also extended to hunting, bowling, and traveling. These were activities that he thoroughly enjoyed and shared with his family and friends.
Those who knew Howard will remember the wonderfully detailed stories he shared about his life and his quick-witted sense of humor. His engaging personality was felt by all who had the pleasure of his company. His courage and determination were evident in the way he faced challenges, especially after he suffered a stroke which left him physically challenged while remaining mentally strong. He persevered and overcame the obstacles that were in his path and continued to enjoy life.
Howard William Knapp's journey through life was one of determination, perseverance, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his generous adventurous spirit. As we say farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.
