Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. on Feb. 5, 2026.
Mary Lou Opitz, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026, at the age of 94 in Jackson, New Jersey. Born on October 7, 1931, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Mary Lou was the cherished daughter of the late Niels and Irene (Allen) Svendsen. Her journey through life was marked by devotion to her family, her faith, and her profession.

Mary Lou's early years were spent in the scenic town of Summit, New Jersey, before moving to Hazlet in 1960. After completing her Associate's Degree, she dedicated her life to the well-being of others as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Regency Park Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Hazlet, New Jersey. Her gentle touch and compassionate spirit left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she cared for and worked alongside.
Her beloved husband, Donald M. Opitz, predeceased her, as did her treasured granddaughter, Amanda Stewart, and her brothers Neil Svendsen and Frank Svendsen. Mary Lou's legacy of love continues through her surviving children, Karen Danchisko and her husband John, Ronald Opitz and his wife Geraldine, Kathleen Stewart and her husband Peter, and Diana Burdge and her husband Joe. She was a guiding star in the lives of her grandchildren, Sean Stewart, Jennifer Norrell, John Danchisko, Amy Sturhann, Elizabeth Muldoon, Laura Opitz, Christopher Opitz, Joseph Mergner, Mikey Mergner, Scott Mergner, Melissa Mergner, and Cris Finley who will forever hold her memory dear, along with her many great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Those who knew Mary Lou would describe her as the epitome of loving. She nurtured her family with unwavering support, enveloping them in warmth and affection. Her caring nature extended beyond her family, touching the lives of her friends, colleagues, and those she cared for during her nursing career. Mary Lou's life was a testament to the power of love and the impact one person can have on the lives of many. Her smile, her laughter, and her unwavering positivity will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
