HOWARD LOTON RASMUSSEN, 71, beloved husband of Ljudmilla Sheveljova Rasmussen, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2026 in Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center in Augusta.
A native of New York City, Howard was son of the late Dr. Loton Horton Rasmussen and Emma Larsen Rasmussen. He proudly embraced his Norwegian heritage, honoring Viking ancestry inherited from both sides of his family. He grew up in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and graduated from Browning School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Western Connecticut State University and his master’s degree from Fairfield University.
Howard began his 34-year career as a history teacher at St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, CT. He relocated to Aiken in 1992 and continued as a history teacher for 24 years at Cambridge Academy in Greenwood, SC. He also taught at Aiken Preparatory School, Aiken Tech and Piedmont Tech.
Howard was a Knight of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem in New York as well as the Lord of Predannack, Wartha, Cornwall. He proudly served his in the New York Guard.
Howard's passions were history and collecting war memorabilia. He was a devoted Trekkie and shared a deep love for Star Trek.
Surviving is his cherished wife, Ljudmilla with whom he shared 28 wonderful years. He is also survived by a step-daughter, Natalie Surzenko of Winston Salem, NC and his granddaughter, Melanie Piisner of Charlotte, NC.
The family will receive friends beginning Saturday morning, February 14th at 10 o’clock at Shellhouse Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11 o’clock. Interment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Langley, SC.
