Howard Norman Schemper, 79, of
Norton, KS passed away September 24, 2024 at the Norton County Hospital. He was born September 14, 1945 in
Norton, KS to Peter and Maxine (Zellmer) Schemper.
Howard grew up in Prairie View and took over the family farm after his father's passing. He married Glenda Garrison and from that marriage they had one son, Greg. In May of 1993, Howard married Kathleen (Bishop) Balderston at their home in Norton. He worked for the CO-OP in Norton hauling fuel and propane for 42 years. During that time, he also worked as an EMT for the Norton County EMS for 29 years. Stock car racing was his favorite hobby. He enjoyed working as an EMT especially when he got to work the races when they were in town. Howard was an avid coffee drinker and patron of Town & Country.
Howard is survived by his wife, Kathleen of 31 years of the home; son, Greg (Peggy) Schemper) of Iola, KS; stepchildren: Shane (Kim) Balderston of San Diego, CA, Shannon (Shawn) Heyden of Bassett, NE, Sherry (Dewayne) Franklin of Hoxie, KS, Travis (Colette) Balderston of McCook, NE, Troy (Sher'rie) Balderston of Beaver City, NE, and Tracy (Adam) Nickel of Axtell, NE; siblings: Irene Kats of Spring Hill, KS, Wauneta Van Der Veen of Prairie View, KS, Verda (Larry) Brown of Prairie View, KS, and Gene Schemper of Norton County, KS; brothers-in-law, Alvah Long of Beaver City, NE, Duane (Lois) Bishop of Beaver City, NE, and Mark Bishop of Beaver City, NE; sister-in-law, Becky Talbott of Morrison, OK; grandchildren: Nicholas (Ashton) Schemper of Yates Center, KS, Gracelyn Schemper of Iola, KS, and Alexandria Schemper of Iola, KS; great grandson, McCoy Schemper; step grandchildren: Anya Balderston, Kanen Balderston, Alexa Ewbank, Jaci Badura, Courtney Zahl, Lexi Andrist, Morgan Heyden, Hannah Franklin, Ali Franklin, Desarae Newkirk, Ashlyn Diederich, Rylie Balderston, Brenna Balderston, Becca Balderston, Chase Nickel, and Chance Nickel, and step-great-grandchildren: Brexlyn Zahl, Cord Newkirk, Raynie Larabee, and Charlie Ewbank. He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law; brothers-in-law, Sherlyn Kats, Marvin Van Der Veen, and Chuck Talbott; sister-in-law, Susan Long; nephew, Sheldon Kats and granddaughter, Lauren Franklin.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Monday, September 30, 2024 at the First Church of God in Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5:00 pm Sunday, September 29, 2024 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Norton County EMS and sent in care of Plumer-Gobber Funeral Home, 215 W.
