Howard Scruggs Obituary

SCRUGGS, Howard E., our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away May 3, 2009, at home, surrounded by his family. Howard was born in Charlotte County, Virginia, on April 18, 1925, to Albert O. Scruggs and Mary Iva Elder Scruggs. He graduated from Randolph Henry High School in 1942, and served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He married June Trent July 5, 1948. He was a retired farmer and lineman for Southside Electric Coop. He had a great love and appreciation for the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church and attended Monte Vista Baptist Church. Howard is survived by his wife of 60 years, June; their five children, Howard Scruggs and his wife, Dorinda, Anne Duffer and her husband, Randy; Billy Scruggs and Marty Scruggs, all of Hurt, Va., Judy Farris and her husband, Ted, of Draper, Utah. He was the proud "Papa" of 12 grandchildren, Tiffany and Tara Scruggs, Amy Cox, Rachel Nichols, Justin and Ryan Scruggs, Sarah, Mary Ann, and Beth Scruggs, and Ian, Colin, and Hannah Farris; and four great-grandchildren, Lexi and Eric Nichols, Zachary Scruggs and Hayden Scruggs. Also surviving is a sister, Norma Tuggle and her husband, Bobby; and a brother, Kent Scruggs and his wife, Felicia; and his turkey dog, Katie. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Boyd and Albert; and sister, Joyce Marie. Family night will be Wednesday, May 6, 2009, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Monte Vista Baptist Church, Grit Road, Hurt, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 7, 2009, 11 a.m. at Monte Vista Baptist Church by Reverend Latta Terry. Interment will follow 1 p.m. in the Cullen Baptist Church Cemetery, Cullen, Va., with military rites by the American Legion Post 260. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hurt Volunteer Fire Department or the Cullen Volunteer Fire Department. The Browning Funeral Home in Keysville, Va., is in change of the arrangements.
