Publish in a newspaper

Hurl Scruggs Jr., age 86, of Lewisville, Texas, peacefully ascended to his eternal home on October 1, 2025.

Hurl was born on February 6, 1939, in Sherman, Texas, to the late Hurl Scruggs Sr. and Viola Malvern Scruggs. He attended Fred Douglass High School, where he was active in drama and band, and graduated with the Class of 1957.

On November 16, 1957, Hurl married his high school sweetheart, Mary Louise Washington. Their union of 67 years was blessed with four children and a lifetime of love, partnership, and faith.

Hurl began his professional career with IBM in June 1962, becoming one of the first African American employees in the company's Sherman, Texas, location. In January 1976, he relocated to Boulder, Colorado, continuing a remarkable 30-year career marked by dedication and excellence. Rising through the ranks into management, he received numerous awards and commendations for his performance. Hurl retired in 1992 as Manager of International Purchasing.

Following retirement, Hurl and Mary moved to Lewisville, Texas, where he quickly became an active and beloved member of Lane Chapel CME Church. Joining in 1993, he played an instrumental role in the church's growth, overseeing building repairs and helping to expand its presence within the Dallas/Fort Worth District. His leadership and record-keeping system remain in use today.

Deeply committed to service, Hurl also served as Lay President for the Dallas/Fort Worth Region, implemented the 100 Man Choir, and participated in various CME Church Conference events. Beyond the church, he contributed his time and talents to the Denton County Appraisal District Board and numerous City of Lewisville projects.

Hurl was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather-a man of deep faith, quiet strength, and unwavering integrity. His wisdom, humor, and love for family left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Alfred, Albert, and Larry Scruggs; sisters Lillie B. Lucas and Sammie Gardner; and brothers-in-law John Gardner Sr. and Joel Talton.

Hurl leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Mary L. Scruggs of Lewisville; sons Kenneth H. Scruggs Sr. and Randall D. Scruggs Sr. of Lewisville, and Brian D. Scruggs of Arlington; daughter Kathy L. Walford of Lewisville; sister Jean Talton of Florida; sister-in-law Etta Scruggs of Sherman; and brother-in-law Jimmy Booth of Commerce.

He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Kenneth H. Scruggs Jr. (Wylie), Vincent G. Walford (Dallas), Zachary A. Scruggs (Tara) of Sachse, Randall D. Scruggs Jr. (Las Vegas, Nevada), Rachel A. Scruggs, Raina V. Gresham (Daniel) of Arlington, and Lillie C. Scruggs of Missouri. He also leaves behind six great-grandsons, three great-granddaughters, and a host of extended family members and dear friends.

Hurl will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was not only a devoted husband and steadfast father but also a proud and loving grandfather whose joy came from the laughter, accomplishments, and togetherness of his family. His gentle spirit, wisdom, and unwavering love created a legacy of strength and compassion that will live on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Though his earthly presence is gone, the warmth of his memory and the lessons he taught will continue to guide and inspire those who loved him most.
