Howard Dale Smith, 71, of Hutchinson, died December 12, 2025, at his home. He was born September 27, 1954, in Hutchinson, to Paul E. and Verna M. (Loftis) Smith.

Howard graduated from Hutchinson Community College with a degree as a computer support specialist in networking, of which he as very proud. His career was well-rounded, including Mama's Pizza, Consolidated Manufacturing, Farmland Industries, and retiring from Multi Community Diversified Services.

Howard loved cars, whether he was involved with them personally or not. His favorite pastime was strolling through aisles of cars at car shows or watching drag racing, either participating or from the stands. Howard loved his sand-rail, which he was so proud of building with his own hands, and going to the sand dunes to cruise.

On August 17, 1979, Howard married Anita J. Shafer, in Hutchinson. They shared 46 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: his mother, Verna Smith of Hutchinson; sons, Scott Smith of Kingman, Jamie Smith of Hutchinson, Bucky Smith of Attica; six grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Dale Shafer, Craig Shafer (Lindsey Derr), all of Hutchinson; sisters-in-law, Polly Holler (Brad) of McPherson, and Jill Shafer of Hutchinson.

Howard was preceded in death by: his father; brothers, Bob Smith, Denny Smith; sister, Carlene Ward; mother-in-law, Geraldine Shafer; and brother-in-law, Glenn Shafer.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson, with Pastor Kevin Guffey officiating.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hutchinson Animal Shelter or donor's choice, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
