Howard Franklin Southwell, Sr., age 101, a native Austinite, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and attended Austin schools. Howard served in the South Pacific during World War II and worked in government service for 44 years.

Howard was proceeded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lillie Mae Raven Southwell; his wife, Mary Jane Southwell; his oldest son, Howard "Butch" Southwell, Jr.; his siblings Clarence Earl Southwell, Bonnie Lee Southwell and Kathy Neal and her husband Barton D.

He is survived by his daughter Janice Kay Townsley and her husband Terrel; two sons, Gregory Lee and Stephen Wayne and his wife Sandra; daughter-in-law Mary Margaret Quadlander; granddaughters, Melissa Ann Southwell, Teresa Kay Southwell, and Stephanie Michelle Thompson; and his four great grandchildren, Austin Robert and Wyatt Rayburn Thompson, Hannah Jane Southwell and Claire Aurelia Hopkins.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Austin Memorial Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Drive. Rev. Carrie Houston will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Volunteer Council at the Austin State Supported Living Center or First Baptist Church of Austin, TX.
