Howard Spradling Obituary

83, of St. Albans, died peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2025, after a lengthy illness.

Born February 10, 1942, in Charleston, Alan was a 1960 graduate of South Charleston High School. He was a lifetime member of the United Association (UA) of Pipefitters & Plumbers Union 625 in Charleston with 62 years of service.

Alan loved all sports, especially following the WVU Mountaineers. As a boy, he enjoyed the stock car races and was always eager to participate and be a part of "Owen's" crew. When he was a teenager and younger man he played baseball, basketball, and softball recreationally. He was an avid golfer and played whenever he could. He loved spending time in Canaan Valley with his golfing buddies. Alan also found joy and comfort in listening to country and folk music. He was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church in St. Albans.

Alan was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Spradling Simmons, of Charlotte, NC; his mother & stepfather Elizabeth "Betty" and Richard "Owen" Spradling of St. Albans; and his in-laws, Roy & Clara Hall of South Charleston; stepsister, Carol Spradling Payne; sisters-in-law, Helen Hall Parsons and Anna Hall Rucker.

Alan is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Ruth Hall Spradling, of St. Albans; son, Andy Spradling and his wife, Mylissa, of St. Albans; grandson, 2nd Lt. Evan Spradling (Caroline) with the U.S. Army in Texas; granddaughters Audrey Spradling and Claire Spradling, both of St. Albans; granddaughter Chloe Simmons, of Los Angeles, California; grandson, Logan Simmons of Dallas, Texas; Son-in-law Chip Simmons (Marcy, Brooks & Charlie) of Dallas, Texas; brother-in-law Carl Parsons, of Charleston; several nieces & nephews, and many cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Bartlett-Nichols Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Mike Hager officiating. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. A graveside service will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston (Southridge).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Faith Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 346, St. Albans, WV 25177. The family would like to thank the staff at CAMC Putnam for their special care, and especially Kelly Tinsley for her guidance and dedication.
