Howard Rex Spruill, age 90, passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2024. A graveside service with Dr. Tim Lovett officiating will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 28 at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel directing.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Sellers Spruill; parents John Murray and Chloe Spruill; brother Leo Spruill; sisters-in-law Helen Oswalt and Jane Sellers; brothers-in-law John Oswalt, Buck Sellers, and Clarence Sellers.
Survivors include daughter Carla Spruill; sons Mike Spruill (Anne), Wesley Spruill (Donna); grandchildren Dustin Spruill (Kacie), Mylan Spruill (Alyssa), Jon Spruill (Traci), Caroline Schoppert (Logan) and Leslie Hardin (Braxton); and great grandchildren Eleanor Spruill, Millie Spruill, Grayson Spruill, Jase Spruill, Michael Schoppert and Kennedy Schoppert.
Rex was born March 8, 1933, in Tuscaloosa. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1950. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and was devoted to his family and friends. He served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. He retired from BF Goodrich after 30 years of service. He was a man of endless energy and worked tirelessly to develop a successful rental property business on the University of Alabama campus. He was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and on the Building and Grounds committee. He enjoyed collecting antiques and especially loved driving his A Model and Ford Phaeton. He enjoyed hours spent fishing with his friends. His strong faith and sense of humor sustained him throughout his life.
The family offers their sincere appreciation for his outstanding care given by Betty Croom, Bettie Hambright, Brenda Hardy, Quinton Hopkins, Timothy Miller, Earnestine Morgan, Cheryl Royal, Robert Woods, and Hospice of West Alabama.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Paul Nelson, Kelly Wright Hurd, Hootie Ingram, John Hogue, Billy Sharp, Dr. John Miller, Dr. Tom Farmer and members of the Keystone Sunday School Class, BF Goodrich Local 351, Tuscaloosa Black Bears, and the Wright's Restaurant breakfast group.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 1121 Paul W. Bryant Drive, Tuscaloosa AL 35401, Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa AL 35404, or a charity of your choice.
