Hugh Copper Obituary

Hugh Lamont "Monty" Copper

January 3, 1939 - March 13, 2026

Hugh Lamont "Monty" Copper, 87, of Elkton, Va., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and family on Friday, March 13, 2026. Born on January 3, 1939, in Waynesboro, Va., Copper was the son of the late Hugh Lamont and Dorothy (Snow) Copper.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mike Herring; and his brother, Ronald Dee Copper.

Copper graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1957 and went on to serve his country in the United States Army. He was as large as life, twice as natural, and lived every day on his own terms. From a young age, Copper was an avid outdoorsman - riding motocross, camping, hunting, and building a cherished gun collection that reflected his lifelong love of the outdoors. That same passion carried him onto the golf course, where he spent countless hours enjoying the game he loved.

On August 31, 1968, Copper married the love of his life, Sheila (Comer) Copper, beginning a partnership that would span 58 years. He built a career as a sales representative at Economy Beauty Supply and Bruton's, where he worked until retirement. But it was his personality that truly defined him - larger than life, always smiling, laughing, and dancing with friends.

Copper was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all.

Copper is survived by his wife, Sheila (Comer) Copper; son, John Herring and wife Jane; daughters, Leslie McAlister and husband Wayne, and Monika Deaton and husband Will; grandchildren, April Hicks (Bryan), Jonah Herring, Brandy Campbell (Dusty), Avery Deaton, Graham Deaton, and Ellory Deaton; and great-grandchildren, Emma Sellars, Logan Sellars, Emily Campbell, Luke Campbell, and Abby Campbell.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Pastor Carter Dean will officiate.

A reception will follow at Robert Good Photography Studio, 12517 Spotswood Trail, Elkton, Va.

Interment will be private.

Condolences may be shared at kygers.com.

Sheila.....I´m so saddened to learn of Monty´s passing. He would tell me that you were the love of his life.....and enjoyed the happiest life with you. He truly was a friend to all and a wonderful soul. Always had a smile and loved to talk about the old times....we sure had lots of fun and laughs with so many friends. He will forever be in our hearts as well as yours. Hugs and prayers for you and the family.
