Hugh was the son of Charlotte Evelyn Hemmings & Robert Woods Ferguson. He was born on November 11, 1934 and grew up in Tacoma, Washington with his four siblings Nancy, Dave, Susan, & Bruce. He attended Seattle University where he earned a degree in accounting. After graduating, Hugh joined the Navy as an officer and became an expert deep sea diver. He enjoyed living on the naval ships and sailing around the world. After four years of active duty, Hugh remained in the Navy reserves and retired after 25 years at the rank of Commander.
In 1959 Hugh married the love of his life Rose Marie Davis. They eventually moved to California living in San Diego, Concord and settling in Walnut Creek. They were the proud parents of Kathleen Foiles (Robert), Karen Ferguson, and Robert Ferguson. Hugh was a grandfather of six grandchildren Kevin Foiles (Chanell), Robbie Foiles, Michael Foiles, Sierra Ferguson, Alexis Ferguson, and Luke Ferguson. Hugh was awaiting the birth of his first great grandson Evander Wade Foiles, but the Lord called Hugh home 3 days before. Hugh loved his in-laws Lou & Stella Sherer, Andy & Eleanor Cook, Mike & Kay Davis and many nieces and nephews. He was a dear friend to many especially his friends at the dog park and Boundary Oaks Golf Club.
After his honorable discharge from active duty in the navy, Hugh and Rose lived near Washington D.C. while Hugh obtained his MBA from George Washington University. In 1964 they moved to Concord California and Hugh worked for Western Pacific Railroad Company until he joined Ernst & Whinney as a CPA. He worked there until he retired from the company and started his own CPA practice.
Hugh was an avid golfer and active member of the Walnut Creek Golf Club. He loved sports specifically golf, basketball and football. The television was always on a sports channel.
After retirement Hugh cared for his wife Rose Marie until her death in 2019. His dogs Missy & Bella gave him great joy in life. Hugh loved going for long rides and exploring the backroads and especially watching the turkeys at Boundary Oaks. He loved to joke around and had a very dry sense of humor. Hugh passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 90. His memory will forever remain in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held on September 30, 2025 at Saint John Vianney Catholic Church, 1650 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek at 10am.
