Spilsbury Mortuary - St. GeorgeHugh Lorraine Johnson, a faithful and devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, has passed away after a brief illness. He was 91.
Hugh was born on August 8, 1934, to Hugh Leonard Johnson and Elizabeth Everett. His family lived in St. George for a time before moving to Southern California shortly after turning eight years old.
They settled in Azusa, where he attended Citrus Union High School and graduated class of 1953. Hugh served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Swedish Mission from 1956 to 1958, and upon his return, began his studies at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in drafting and design. He enjoyed all things BYU and bled blue until the very end!
Hugh met his future wife, Vivian Jean Cox, while attending school at BYU. Hugh and Jean married on June 22, 1963, in the California Los Angeles Temple.
They had three children: Kelly, Erik, and Julianne. Hugh established his family as longtime residents in the foothill community of La Verne, California, and would later finish his Master's degree in Business Administration at the University of La Verne.
Following his wife's death from cancer in 2007, Hugh would later meet and marry Claudia Orvin Hansen. They enjoyed traveling and having neighbors and friends join them in the Cougar room to watch anything BYU.
Hugh is survived by his widow Claudia and his three children; Kelly Jean Bullock (Timothy), Erik Hugh Johnson (Monica) and Julianne Cromer (Mark); seven grandchildren; Cortland Bullock (Noelle), Marley DeMann (Benjamin), Rylie Bullock, Rhett Bullock, Mason Bullock, Ava Johnson, and Emily Engstrom, and three great-grandchildren; Rebecca, Harvey and Levi DeMann. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Barbara Eleen Johnson Demke, his wife, Jean Johnson, and his grandchildren, Christopher Elton, Leslie Jean, and Ethan Scott Bullock.
