The Rev. Hugh Lee Simmons, 85, of Morristown, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at Lakeway Regional Hospital.

He was raised in Carter County, coming to Hamblen County in 1950 to work the Kinnick dairy farm. Here he met and married the love of his life-Peggy Denton. He retired from BASF (Enka) after 38 and a half years of service, where he was known as "preacher." He served as a Baptist pastor of Mt. Zion (St. Clair), Beulah (Greene Co.), Manning's Chapel (Del Rio) and Point Pleasant (Newport). Hugh Lee also served as Interim Pastor at Fernwood and East Rogersville Baptist Church. The Rev. Simmons also played a supportive role in the ministries of White Oak Baptist Church (Morristown) and French Broad (Dandridge), where his wife served as organist.

Hugh Lee was a faithful member of Grace Baptist of Morristown and served in various capacities in the Nolachucky Association. He enjoyed teaching Sunday school, working in Brotherhood and Children's Bible Drill. Using his talents in woodworking, decorative metal projects and other handmade items brought joy to many. Gardening and canning were much loved hobbies.

Hugh Lee was preceded in death by infant son, Hugh Alan Simmons; parents C. V. and Tullia Kinnick Simmons; brothers, Cecil, Harry and Dana Simmons, all of the Johnson City area; sisters, Ruby Simmons of Johnson City and Louise Scott of Jonesborough.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Peggy Denton Simmons; daughters, Pam Forgety and husband, Joe Forgety of Clinton and Toni Simmons of Alcoa; grandchildren, Lee (Abby) Forgety of Powell, Jared (Rachel) Forgety of Andersonville, Loren Forgety of Clinton; twin granddaughters, Alex and Tori, Janae and Ranay Simmons, all of Alcoa; great-granddaughter, Emma Forgety of Powell; brother, Lowell (Frances) Simmons; sister, Wynona Simmons Miller, all of Jonesborough; a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Grace Baptist Church. The service will be held at 7 p.m. with the Rev. James Williams Jr. and Dr. Todd Stinnett officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hamblen Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be sent to Grace Baptist Church, PO Box 416, Morristown, TN 37815 for the church food pantry, where Hugh Lee and Peggy volunteered many hours.

Preacher did maintenance work on my machines at BASF. He never said a lot (I am not a big talker either), but I knew he was a good man. Years later he and my father met at French Broad. Although my father had never worked with him at BASF; he was in maintenance too. Daddy thought a lot of him and spoke often of him. When my Mom passed away Preacher made each of us a candle holder from the flower stands. I will always remember that thoughtful gesture. Daddy is gone now and I am sure Preacher and Daddy are reminiscing about the days they spent at BASF.

Sending thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

To the family,
I am Lena, the sister-n-law of Cecil. I remember being at the childhood home with Wynona playing and having a great time. Hugh Lee was younger than me, a skinny boy him and Lowell. I have prayed many prayers for Hugh Lee over the years as I kept in touch with Osa and Cecil. I am sorry for your loss but not sorry for Hugh Lee as he is in a better place with the Lord. May the God of all comfort be with you during this time. For those who are in Christ Jesus, we will meet again.
Blessing's,
Lena Street Honeycutt

Pam. I was sorry to read about your fathers passing. We are never ready for our loss; but I could tell in reading your Dad's obituary- he was ready. What a blessing to know that his earthly life reflected his heavenly life to be! Not to mention I have seen some of his faith reflected through you! You are a wonderful reflection of Gods good. Love.
