William Dorsey Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Staley-Strawser Funeral Home - Deer Park from Dec. 29 to Dec. 31, 2025.
William Hugh Dorsey Smith, Jr., age 83, of Silverton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 25, 2025. He was the devoted husband of 41 years to Sherriell Smith and the cherished father of Marcus Smith, Nathaniel (Jennifer) Smith, Sheryl Smith, Susan (Rick) Ayers, Angela (Scott) Pace, David Wayne Reynolds, and the late Julie Hornburg. Hugh was a proud grandfather to Nicholas, Triniti, Hailey, Elijah, Jocelynn, Cynthia, Trenton, Chloe and Kamden. Born on September 9, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the beloved son of the late Hugh Sr. and Mary Lee Smith. He is also survived by his siblings, Jerome Smith and Sonya Hart, and was preceded in death by his brother Victor Smith.
Hugh was known for his dedication and hard work throughout his life. After completing high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country with honor. Once his military service ended, Hugh went on to build a career at Delta Airlines, where he remained committed until he retired. His faith in Jesus Christ provided him with strength through life's challenges and during his time in the war. Hugh had a passion for iconic figures-he admired Elvis Presley so much he wished to resemble him, and he never missed a film featuring John Wayne, enjoying every role "the Duke" played. He was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan as well, steadfastly supporting his favorite team.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Hugh's life at a visitation on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM at DEER PARK Staley-Strawser Funeral Home, 7140 Plainfield Rd., Deer Park, OH 45236. Burial will be in the National Cemetery observed privately by the family. Online condolences may be shared at www.staleyfuneralhome.com
