It is great sadness that we announce the passing of Ida Villarreal Avila, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the age of 83. Ida was born in San Marcos, Texas on March 24, 1942, to Elisa Porter and Daniel Villarreal. She lived a life filled with love, laughter and unwavering dedication to her family.
She married Jerome Avila Jr. on May 2, 1958, in San Marcos, Texas. She was not only a homemaker, but a determined woman, who sold Tupperware and was even the first woman car salesman at Jerry Wagner in San Marcos. She made a bet with Jerome that she would sell a car her first day and did. Her strength and willingness to do things outside of her comfort zone was a thing to be admired. Ida could be seen at the dances when she was younger, with her grandmother, and her cousins, and then later after she was married, listening to all the big names in Tejano music. She loved dancing with Jerome, and dancing was something she passed down to her kids, grandkids and even great grandkids dancing to Joe Bravo or Sunny Ozuna in the kitchen or living room. She had a great passion for family and shopping and would sometimes travel to Austin and San Antonio on the same day to shop at her favorite stores. She loved spending time with her family and would go with them to play bingo, to the casino, to watch their baseball or volleyball games, and eating at the market square in San Antonio. As she started to have grandchildren, she helped care for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, which were the lights of her life.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Elisa P. Selvera, daughter, Sandra Avila, and husband, Jerome Avila Jr. She is survived by her children, Jerome Avila III, Sharon (David) Avila Morin, Regina (Jack) Avila, and Phillip (Cathy) Avila. Her grandchildren, Kelli (Christopher) Huston, Kenneth Avila, Kevin (Allie) Morin, Corey (Alyssa) Morin, Brandon Avila, and Patrick (Mollie) Rodriguez. Her great grandchildren, Hayden Huston, Noah Rodriguez, Hailey Huston, and Ronin Morin. Sisters, Nelda Miranda, Cynthia Romero, and Deborah Selvera, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was cared for lovingly by her grandson, Kevin and his wife Allie the last year of her life.
Family, friends, and others are invited to Thomason Funeral Home 2001 Old Ranch Road 12, San Marcos, TX on Friday and Saturday to reminisce and honor the life of Ida Avila. In lieu of flowers, Ida would like donations made to The National Shrine of St. Jude’s.
