Ike Callaway Obituary

Ike Wingate Callaway

February 8, 1947 - May 7, 2024

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - Ike Wingate Callaway, DVM of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina passed unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024. Ike was born in Lexington, Kentucky to Mary Russell and Coleman D. Callaway, Jr. He was a graduate of Henry Clay High School and Transylvania University before attending the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Upon graduation in the Class of 1978, Ike worked for the esteemed practice of Hagyard, Davidson, McGee Associates, known now as Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, recognized as the world's oldest and largest private equine practice. As other interests grew, he retired from his veterinary practice and moved his family to Hilton Head in 1989. On the Island, Ike worked in real estate development and other business enterprises and investments. Most recently, he was the owner-operator of The House Butler, LLC, a business he enjoyed from 2011 until his untimely death.

Ike had many interests. He was an avid hunter and marksman. He enjoyed rebuilding his beloved 1967 Austin Healy which reminded him of the olden days. He met weekly with his Business Network International ("BNI") chapter which helps foster the growth of local small businesses.

Above all, he was extremely devoted to and proud of his two children and their amazing accomplishments. He was also proudly committed to his two grandchildren and loved being known as "Granddaddy."

Ike was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife and mother of his children, the late Mary Ellery (nee Ezzell). He is survived by his brother, Coleman D. Callaway III, and several beloved nieces and nephews. The joy of his life has been his children, Ike Wingate Callaway, Jr. of Tampa, Florida, and Catherine Callaway Kelly (Mills) of Houston, Texas, and his two Texas grandchildren, Brooks Douglas (2) and Charlotte Ellery (7 mos.). In addition to his beloved family, he is survived by many treasured friends with whom he spent lots of time engaged in a myriad of activities and interests.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on Monday, July 1st, from 4:00 - 6:30 PM at the Arthur Hills Golf Course. Please RSVP using the link provided if you plan on attending by Monday, June 10th (https://www.eventcreate.com/e/ikecallaway ).

To Ike´s wonderful children and grandchildren and also brother Coley.... Garland and I send our deepest condolences and love to all of you. For you who do not know, Ike grew up with me from kindergarten to our college years. He was one of my favorite friends from my growing up. Even though he was always cool, he was always very caring and kind. We both loved him very much and send prayers to the family and their grief.

Met Ike when he first moved to the island. He loved his Kentucky bourbon! He would regale tales from his equine vet days. He will be missed from friends and family. Prayers to his family.

So sad to hear of his passing, I knew him as a loving parent of his two children. Back in the day at Sea Pines Montessori School
