I am so sorry that I didn't know until today that Ilan passed away last year. I knew him well from his love of Bach, and it was whilst I was the Guest Artist with the Israel Chamber Orchestra that our friendship began. He loved Bach, and played his flute when we met up in the evening to work our way through a volume of Bach Arias. I saw quite a lot of him in Tel Aviv, and then when he moved to London we met occasionally with our respective spouses. Ilan had sung with Paul Steinitz's London Bach Society earlier in his career and was thrilled that I sang for Paul regularly.
We sort of lost touch when he and Smadar moved to the USA, so I would be delighted to get back in touch with Smadar if at all possible.
Dear Ilan - I remember him and his enthusiasms so vividly.

I was writing a piece about Israel when something reminded me of Ilan and I Googled his name. I was much saddened to learn that he had died just days earlier. I would like to offer my condolences to all of his family. Ilan and I met in 1956 at Harrow Tech in London, where we were both catching up with subjects we still needed for university entrance. We became quite good friends, sometimes together with another student, a quiet and pleasant Egyptian we called Red for some reason. A few weeks into our course came the Suez affair, which Ilan thought the best thing Britain had done for ages, the Egyptian not so much. History has not been kind to the adventure. Ilan and I went to different colleges of London University and we lost touch. We bumped into each other many years later, in the early 1980s, and Ilan visited my flat in Hampstead, where he tried to explain the ingenious pocket calculator he was developing with Texas Instruments. Then we lost contact again and I learned he had crossed the Pond. Ilan was an original, charming in the Israeli style, with a formidable mind. I thought you might like to see the drawing I did of him.
Shalom.

A privilege to know Ilan. Working with him was exacting and yet always humorous. Never a dull moment.
