A memorial service celebrating the life of lmogene "lmo" Whyte Murphy will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, August 26, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, 900 Jordan Street, Shreveport, LA. Following the service there will be a reception in the parlor.
lmo was born in Texarkana, Texas on August 6, 1931. Her parents were James Alan and Edith Mitchell Whyte. lmo was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, William T. Murphy, lll, and her older brother, Jack Carter.
lmo graduated from Arkansas High School in 1949. She attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, LA before transferring to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she served as president of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in mathematics in 1953. lmo and Bill were married on August 12, 1952. After two years in the US Air Force they moved to Shreveport, LA where they raised their three children. She was active in her church and community while caring for their children and supporting Bill at Murco Drilling Corp. Both lmo and Bill enjoyed traveling together with friends and on business.
lmo gave of herself to many organizations, always making a difference in her own quiet way. Some of the organizations most dear to her heart were First Presbyterian Church, Junior League of Shreveport, Mental Health Association, Southfield School, and The Oaks of Louisiana. lmo served as president of Junior League of Shreveport where she was instrumental in starting the Mollie E. Webb Speech & Hearing Center. She was named as Junior League Sustainer of the Year in 2006. She enjoyed her First Presbyterian Church circle, working as a volunteer in a number of roles at Southfield School, and enjoyed participating in the 20th Century Study Group for many years. lmo had a keen mind, kind and generous heart and made friends wherever she was involved.
She is survived by her three children, AIan Murphy (Karen), Tom Murphy (Ginny), and Edie Davis (Chuck); seven grandchildren, Shannon Payne (Scott), Brooks Murphy, Caroline Murphy, John Murphy, Thomas Murphy, Henry Shepley (Carly), William Shepley (Elly); and four great-grandchildren, Andie and Hopper Payne, Poppy Shepley, and Tucker Shepley.
lmo lived at The Oaks of Louisiana during her last years and received excellent care there. The family would like to thank the following for their efforts on lmogene's behalf: Dr. Dan Moller and Dr. Scott McRight, longtime caregivers Diane and Ray Feaster, Betty Williams, Shelleta Brown, Doras Wilson, Lois Tucker, and the staff at The Oaks.
