Iola Claire Mehrer, 91, Minot, passed away February 9, 2024 at Pro Healthcare in Minot.
Iola was born in Benedict, ND to Sylvester (Sally) and Clara (Dunaway) Schoenberg on August 16, 1932. Growing up, she lived on the Dunaway farm. She attended country grade school, 1st year High School in Benedict, and then attended Velva High School. Iola met Leon Mehrer and in the fall of 1949. They were united in marriage on September 23, 1949. They lived on a farm in Turtle Lake, ND. They later moved to a farm in Sawyer, ND, and finally settled in a home in Sawyer. She was a member of the Sawyer Nazarene Church. She was always very busy raising her family of 6 children, gardening, and helping with the farm work. She also worked at a couple motels in Minot and became known for her cake decorating skills during the 18 years she worked at the Minot Piggly Wiggly Bakery. She later moved to Minot, ND during her husband's illness. During this time, she worked cleaning houses.
Iola lived a life dedicated to her faith in God, loving family, and a strong work ethic. She believed love is most important, and family was very special to her.
Iola is survived by her children, Dave (Esther) Mehrer, Alexandria, MN, Donald (Wanda) Mehrer, Buffalo, WY, Dean Mehrer, Minot, ND, Debra (Dana) Suelzle, Hazen, ND, Dwight (Heni) Mehrer, Minot, ND, and Denise (Kim) Haga, Karlsruhe, ND; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sisters, Murriel (Kenneth) Brown, Casper, WY, and Edith (Ralph) Plesuk, Bismarck, ND; numerous nieces and nephews, and Anjula (Conway) Hoffman, who Iola considered to be like her adopted daughter.
Iola is preceded in death by her husband Leon; her parents; brother, LeRoy Schoenberg; sister, Joyce (Schoenberg) Satran; brothers-in law, Kenneth (Murriel) Brown, Wesley (Joyce) Satran, and Ralph (Edith) Plesuk; and sister-in-law, Valerie (LeRoy) Schoenberg.
A funeral service will be held at the Southside Church of the Nazarene in Minot on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 11 a.m. The service will be livestreamed for the public to view and can be accessed by going to the Thompson-Larson Funeral home website: https://www.youtube.com/@thompson-larsonfuneralhome3198.
Burial will follow at the Velva Community Cemetery in Velva.
