Dr. Ira Shapira

Dr. Ira Shapira, 75, died on October 20, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was twice widowed, having lost his beloved Elise and later Anna, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He was devoted father of his children Rachel (Danny) and William (Stephanie), and stepson Henri (Deirdre); proud popa to Abby, Ellie, Freya and Gunnar; and loving brother of Sarita (the late Michael) and Esther (Moshe).

Dr. Shapira, a dentist for nearly 50 years, was endlessly curious, finding joy in solving life's puzzles and inspiring others through his passion and insight. Though absent minded at times, his generosity was unwavering and he had a gift for making others smile, Dr. Shapira was an innovator in the fields of neuromuscular dentistry and dental sleep medicine, publishing many scientific articles and speaking at conferences all over the world. He believed in holistically treating his patients to relieve chronic pain, improve sleep and restore quality of life. His ability to think outside the box allowed him to help others when more conventional methods had failed. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many patients whose lives he touched with care and compassion.
