Irene T. (Krzynowek) Cormier, 88, of Shrewsbury, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025, at Holy Trinity Nursing and rehabilitation Center in Worcester, while surrounded by loving family. Her husband, John Cormier, Jr., predeceased her in 1980.
Irene is survived by her four children, Michael Kuszewski of Worcester, John Cormier, III of Santa Monica, CA, Natasha Cormier of Worcester, and Christopher Cormier Maggiano and his spouse Chase of Washington, DC; a brother, Richard Polewaczyk; five grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, and Thomas Kuszewski, Jack Cormier, and Cora Maggiano; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Joanne Harold. Irene was born in Worcester, daughter of the late, Benjamin and Helen (Golaszewska) Krzynowek, and was raised by Helen and the late Wallace Polewaczyk. She graduated from Saint Mary’s High School in Worcester and Salter’s School of Business.
Irene worked at UMass Medical Center for thirty years, where she was the Head of Administration for the Department of Child Psychology, before retiring in 1992. She was a member of Saint Mary’s Church in Shrewsbury and found great strength and comfort in her faith. Irene adored her family and enjoyed hosting family events, where she could dote on her grandchildren and share a treat from Hebert’s Candies. She loved watching movies and could always be found taking one of her grandchildren to the movie theater. She also found great peace while at the beach, especially anywhere on Cape Cod.
Calling Hours will be on Thursday, March 6, from 4 pm until 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Her Funeral will be on Friday, March 7, with a procession departing the funeral home at 9:40 am enroute to a 10 am Funeral Mass at Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Interment will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery in Worcester.
