Irene Morkunas, 97, of Johnson City, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was one of 9 children of Polish immigrants, George and Martha Orzel. Irene was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Albert; grandson, Andy Nesbitt; great-grandson, Adam Nesbitt; great-granddaughter, Sophia Nesbitt; and her siblings, Chester, Laura, Stanley, Sophie, Helen, Henry, Frank and George. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy (Gary) Nesbitt and Terri (Don) Hanrahan; her grandchildren, Rob (Esther) Nesbitt, Chris (Chandra) Nesbitt, Sarah (Zack) Symm and Matthew Hanrahan; her great-grandchildren, Andrew Nesbitt, Alex Nesbitt, Dylan Nesbitt, Lisa Nesbitt, Augusta Symm; and many nieces and nephews. She was born and raised in Binghamton and grew up on Pulaski Street where she graduated from Binghamton Central High School. Irene was retired from Wilson Hospital Auxiliary, where she managed the gift shop for many years. She was a member of the First Ward American Legion Post 1254, and the Great Bend, PA VFW Post 6223 where she was the head of the Women's Auxiliary, assisted the Monday night Bingo and organized the Chicken and Biscuits. Irene and Albert were also members of the Polka Paraders and the River Rats at their cottage in Kirkwood along with Steve and Terry Yevchak. She was a devoted member of The Church of the Holy Trinity. At the age of 97, the morning Word Jumble was part of her routine. Strong in her faith, she passed with her Rosary in her hands. Many expressions of gratitude go out to the friends and staff at Vestal Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. A graveside service (weather permitting) or chapel, will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Section 36, Tier 192, Friday November 14th at 12:30 PM. Funeral services provided by the Bednarsky Funeral Home.
