Irene Nickels 87, died Friday, June 20, 2025, at Pinicon Senior Living following an extended illness.
Irene Leona Miller was born January 5, 1938, at Springfield, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Rose Balk, Miller. She graduated from the Martelle High School. On February 11, 1961, Irene married Richard Nickels in Sabula, IA. The couple made their home in Anamosa where Irene was employed at Farm Service, the Iowa Men's Reformatory and the Anamosa Middle School as a secretary.
Irene was very active socially being involved in the Friend's of the Library, the Hospital Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, playing Bridge, volunteering at the Prison Museum. She also volunteered as a poll worker at elections and always enjoyed coffee with friends.
Surviving are her children Zach (Kim), Monticello, Alan, Anamosa, Angela (Oyvind) Holtan, North Port, FL, and Amy Walters, Anamosa, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, her sister, Lucille Swanson, Frankfurt, KS, a brother-in-law Clifford Payne, Monticello, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents, her husband, a brother and 3 sisters. Funeral services will be held 11:00 Friday morning, June 27, 2025, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa where friends may call after 9:30 until 11:00. Irene was one of the nicest, most gracious, and sweetest lady to ever have as a friend and neighbor. We will treasure always the neighborhood conversations and get-togethets, bridge games, and the memories shared by our children growing up through the years. May you rest in peace and in God's grace forever!
