Iris Gail Barks, age 81, of Morgantown, KY passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at the Medical Center. She was born in Butler Co., KY on Aug.12, 1943. Gail was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church and worked at Kanes, Kellwood, and SEWS before retiring in 2002 to embrace her role as a homemaker. To say Gail loved gardening is an understatement. She had a remarkable green thumb that could nurture any flower or vegetable to its fullest glory. Her gardens were a testament to her patience, care, and creativity, and they brought beauty and bounty to everyone who visited. Gail's love for gardening was more than a hobby-it was a way she shared her warmth and passion with the world. She had a deep love for genealogy, dedicating countless hours to tracing her family roots and preserving her heritage for future generations. She also cherished her time reading and studying her Bible, drawing inspiration and guidance from its teachings.
Gail was preceded in death by her husband Wilford Barks; parents Casey and Ruby Mae Painter Johnson; brothers Carl Johnson and David Johnson; sisters Nina West and Alice Baker.
Gail is survived by her children Ben Barks (Theresa), Bruce Barks (Alice) and Rebecca Smith (Sam); grandchildren Jacob Barks (Heidi), Lydia Nicewinter (Josh), Austin Smith, Emily Smith, Megan Fulkerson (Scott), Blake Barks; great- grandchildren Ila, Stetson, Chandler, Ember, Raylynn, Kerriann, Brynlee, Kaydence, Kye; twin brother Bobby Dale Johnson (Linda); faithful companion Aussie, her dog; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home with Bro TJ Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Sandy Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 17 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and Tuesday from 10:00 am until Services at 1:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home.
