Irving Nusbaum Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. on Nov. 25, 2025.
Irving F. Nusbaum, 92, a lifelong resident of Matawan, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2025, surrounded by family. Irv's life was defined by devotion to family, service to community, and steadfast commitment to integrity.

Born on May 28, 1933, in Irvington, NJ, and moved to Matawan in 1945. He graduated from Matawan High School in 1951, where he excelled in athletics, earning nine varsity letters in baseball, basketball, track, and football.

After high school, he worked as a machinist at Lavoie Laboratories in Morganville and then served in the United States Army where he was stationed in France. His name is inscribed on the stone at Memorial Park in Matawan in recognition of his service.

Following his military duty, Irv returned to Matawan, where he dedicated himself to civic life. He served with the Matawan First Aid Squad from 1954 to 1963, and coached in the Matawan Little League (now Matawan Aberdeen Babe Ruth), guiding the Blue Jays and Tigers during the league's early years.

In 1961, Irv began his 32 years of service with the Matawan Police Department, where he rose through the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant, ultimately being promoted to Captain in 1984. He retired in 1993 after a distinguished career where he was highly respected by his fellow officers and the entire police force. In addition, he was a founding member of the Matawan PBA Local 179.

Irv married Mary Elizabeth (Herrity) Nusbaum on June 21, 1958, at St. Joseph Church in Keyport. Together he and Betty built their family home in Matawan where they cherished their 62 years of marriage together until Mary's passing in 2022.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Richard Nusbaum, and his lifelong best friend, Dr. Jack Sherman, also of Matawan.

Irv's proudest accomplishment was his family, especially his four grandchildren. Some of his happiest memories were traveling with his dearest friends and enjoying those shared adventures. When he wasn't working, he devoted his time to serving friends and neighbors, always attentive to anyone in need, whether it meant picking up groceries, shoveling a sidewalk, or lending a helping hand. His generosity and quiet acts of service reflected the deep care he had for his community.

Irv is survived by his children, James and his wife Karin, and Robert and his wife Kathryn, along with his cherished grandchildren: Cory, Kyle, Lydia, and Maddie. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community servant whose life reflected the strength of character and deep love of Matawan.

Services and visitation, including police and military honors, will be held from 10:00 am to Noon on Friday, November 28 at the Shore Point Funeral Home located at 3269 State Highway 35, Hazlet, NJ 07730. Following the service a grave side service will be held at Old Tennent Cemetery in Manalapan, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to the Matawan PBA Local 179, located at P.O. Box 261, Matawan NJ 07747.
