Isaac Lane Moel, age 29, passed away at home on August 22, 2025 surrounded by his family and friends. Isaac was born in Iowa City, IA on February 24,1996. He arrived five minutes after his twin brother Clay, and was welcomed by his loving and devoted parents, Joy and Casey Moel. Isaac was an easy, happy baby with blonde hair and big brown eyes. He was the Pooh Bear to his twin's more Tigger-like approach to life. His kind and gentle nature was apparent from birth to his final breath.
Isaac spent his whole life in the Iowa City area. He attended Lemme Elementary before moving out to the country where he, his brothers and best buddies spent lots of time outdoors getting up to all sorts of mischief. His favorite pastimes as a child and beyond included building Legos, collecting cards, and playing games often inspired by fantasy and sci-fi. These childhood passions never left but simply evolved over the years and brought him serenity during difficult stretches of time. He was the artist of the family, loved listening to music, and collected different versions of the novel The Hobbit. He took AP classes at West High School and was a starting offensive lineman on the football team. Isaac was one of those rare guys who could pull off being nerdy and cool at the same time.
Isaac ultimately found his passion in the sport of rugby. While Isaac was arguably one of the most gentle souls on the planet, he could be a beast on the rugby field. It was fun to see this other side of his personality emerge on the pitch with his teammates. His loyalty, perseverance, and strength were a thing to behold. While attending the University of Iowa, he played for the Iowa City Ducks Rugby Club and got to coach his little brother, Logan, on the West High team. It was clear that being a good role model for Logan was always on his mind. Even with a six year age gap, he somehow found ways to include Logan in most everything he and Clay did. In addition to all the fun with his rugby family, Isaac also held dear memories of regular family camping trips to the Poudre River Canyon in CO, cutting down the yearly family Christmas tree, having combo birthday parties with Clay and best friends Joey & Dave, a family trip to Ireland, and being the best man in Clay's wedding. If you got to hear his "famous best man speech", consider yourself very lucky!
In 2019, Isaac's world was turned upside down when at 23, he was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. Beating all the odds, Isaac went on to have 6 more years that were very full of life, due in large part to the constant support of his rock-star advocates and caregivers, utmost his amazing mom and loving wife Chloe. He started his own small business, Luna's Prairie, where he raised and milked dairy goats and crafted and sold goat milk soap at local farmer's markets. He helped build himself a Barndominium to live in and became a dog dad to a big goofy lab, Atticus, and cat dad to Anakin. He was perhaps most proud of becoming an uncle for the first time to his niece and namesake, Laynie Ann.
Isaac was determined to not let cancer rule his life, a point highlighted by him joining Bumble at the end of 2021. After a great first date, Isaac kept Chloe on eggshells for a whole week before texting her to plan a second one. From that day forward, there wasn't a single day that Isaac and Chloe didn't talk to each other. Isaac provided Chloe a renewed outlook on life, and reminded her every day that life isn't a race, but a stroll to be enjoyed. Isaac proposed to Chloe in Colorado in 2023 and they had the most beautiful fall wedding on November 2nd, 2024. They enjoyed their frequent "dates" to Target, sharing a cup of coffee together in the morning, playing Magic the Gathering, and dancing in the kitchen.
Isaac will be remembered by his endearing demeanor and go with the flow approach to life. He was a quiet guy, but had a great sense of humor. His dry witty comments would often catch you off guard and be all the funnier because of it. He was a favorite of all the nurses and doctors who cared for him over the years and so many of them commented on his kindness and patience in the face of unbelievable hardship. There was quite literally nothing that could dull his shine, and despite all life threw at him, he always found the light in the darkness and put others' needs ahead of his own. He lived and loved enough for multiple lifetimes in his 29 years. May his spirit and approach to life continue to inspire others for years to come and remind us all to always and no matter the odds, "Keep Driving Forward"! This was the motto that got his friends and family through the toughest times and was inspired by his Dad, his biggest fan, cheering him on from the sidelines of the rugby pitch.
Isaac is survived by his loving wife Chloe Moel; furbabies Atticus and Anakin; his proud parents Joy and Casey; the best brothers ever, Logan (Taylor) and Clay (Michaela); his sweet niece Laynie; his favorite Aunt April (Yasir); supportive Uncles Schuyler and Eric (Kelly); and adoring Grandparents Mary Moel, Hal Miller, Marjorie Rahe, Patrick Feyen, and Robert Dingbaum.
A Celebration of Life for Isaac will be held in Iowa City on Thursday, August 28th, 2025 at the Lodge at Terry Trueblood from 4-8PM with memorial service at 6PM. Everyone is encouraged (but not required!) to wear something yellow in honor of Isaac's favorite color and time will be provided for those who wish to share memories and sentiments. At Isaac's request, BBQ & ice cream will be served. A private family burial will take place the following day at Cedar Memorial Cemetery. You may visit Isaac there under a majestic oak tree right next to his Grandpa Gary Moel and Great-Grandpa Dean Moel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Man up to Cancer, Colorectal Cancer Alliance, or Chloe Moel to support their future children.
