Ivey Nix Obituary

NIX, Jr., Ivey "Lewis"

Lewis Nix, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA), passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 13, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 79 years old and had successfully kept at bay the blood cancer multiple myeloma for over a decade, eventually succumbing to a rare virus of the brain called PML related to his treatment.

Lewis was born on May 17, 1945, in Macon, Georgia, and grew up in McRae, Georgia. He was the son of the late Sarah McArthur Nix and Ivey Lewis Nix. As a child, he discovered such a passion for painting that he built himself an art studio in the backyard, later translating his skill for drawing into a career as an architect. His mother fostered in him an interest in travel and art, and a trip to Europe on the Queen Elizabeth 2 as a teenager inspired his lifelong love affair with France.

In 1963, Lewis earned a scholarship to the University of Virginia, where he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1968. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Raven Society. Upon graduation, he received an American Institute of Architecture Fellowship and went on to Yale University, where he earned the degree of Master of Environmental Design.

Between graduate school and beginning a teaching job at the University of Maryland, he spent a summer leading tours to Europe. He fell in love with one of the attendees, an Atlanta girl named Maybeth Spalding, whom he married six months later. One of eight children, she always had the house full of friends, family and fine entertainment. They were married for 54 years.

In 1977, Lewis and four other young architects - Henry Mann, Gary Swords, Stuart Aynsley and David Johnson founded the Atlanta architecture firm Nix, Mann and Associates which grew to an Atlanta staff of 125 before being sold to Perkins & Will in Chicago in 1995. Perkins & Will is consistently ranked one of the top U.S. architectural firms.

Lewis always dreamed of owning a residence in Paris, where he felt most inspired and at home. In 1997, that dream came true, and he spent the next three decades visiting multiple times per year. He also loved helping others plan trips around France through a travel company he founded in 1986, France Unique, and a "Let's Go to France!" class he taught through Evening at Emory.

Lewis was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club, the Yale Club of New York City and the Atlanta Rotary Club. He held a variety of board positions with charitable organizations.

His children are Spalding McArthur Nix married to Aimee Bowles Nix, Sarah Sullivan Nix Hunter married to Chris Hunter, and Laura Phinizy Nix Fryer married to Gibbs Fryer.

Lewis always said that he liked to be covered in grandchildren; the more chaos the better. He delighted in his family and expressed his love often and in abundance. His grandchildren are Lucille Louisa Hunter, Frances Sullivan Hunter, Audrey Bolling Nix, Sarah Reynolds Nix, Hamilton Hughes Fryer, Spalding Patton Fryer and Sullivan Sade Fryer.

He is also survived by his dear sister, Sarah Jane Nix Smith, PhD, who was always an inspiration to him in her thirst for knowledge and her deep intellect.

A funeral service will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Atlanta on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM with a reception following at the Piedmont Driving Club. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (themmrf.org) or the Sarah McArthur Nix Traveling Fellowship at the University of Virginia's School of Architecture.

Lewis was one of the best bosses and most delightful people I have ever known. He always listened and made me feel valued not just as an employee but as a person as well. The last time I saw him he told me his disease was well under control and had that great outlook towards the future. He will really be missed by not just me but many many many of us who had the privilege of working for him.

I met Lewis on my first day of work at Perkins&Will. He was visiting the Chicago Office and while he and Henry and the whole Nix Mann team had just recently joined the firm, he welcomed me and I could tell from that brief encounter that he was a very special person.

I am so glad to have known him at such a key phase of my life and I enjoyed his company whenever I was lucky enough to share time with him.

Lewis is to be celebrated and cherished in memory and for his impact on so many people.

My condolences to the family and community. He lives on in all of us.

I am truly saddened to hear of Lewis leaving us. He was a great mentor and to this day, the team of Nix Mann, taught us so much, and still follows my every day! He was a great teacher, and I am proud to be part of the Atlanta office for so many years.
...We lost a great person.

I casually mentioned to Lewis during one of our North Fulton Class of '63 Reunion Committee meetings that I need to change my back yard with some flowers. He listened so intently and I was blown away when he very seriously started to give me recommendations of what and how to go about my 'problem'. Love you still Lewis and miss you.

On a Sunday morning in March 1996, Lewis and I had a phone conversation where he offered me the biggest opportunity of my life, joining Nix Mann which was transitioning to Perkins&Will.

Lewis was always easy to be around and work with. Happy, very supportive and simply a wonderful person. He trusted us to make the right decisions and when we did not, he always had our back. I enjoyed visiting with Beth and Lewis at holiday parties. I was fortunate to do a few project interviews with Lewis and he was a natural, a person to look up to. We could always joke with him, and he was always a very good sport.

Lewis supported all of us. I am impressed by the very good life he lived. He will be missed, but very much remembered and always appreciated.

Respectfully

Lewis hired me at Nix Mann and Associates. A young 19-year-old who moved down from Wisconsin and I ended up working there 22 years. He was a mentor and friend. When I got married he told me I had to add silver to my registry. And then he and the partners bought me an 8 piece place setting that I treasure today. He encouraged us to buy our first house at 26 years old. He said "Amy, just get in there, you can sell it and upgrade later." Of course, he was right. He also taught me you can always be kind in tough work situations. He made the best egg nog every Christmas and introduced me to cheese straws! He will be greatly missed.

Dear Nix Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. What a remarkable legacy Lewis created. His passion for people and design was truly infectious. I don´t think I ever saw Lewis without that genuine smile on his face. He had a way of making everyone around him feel good and inspired to be a better person, a gift that left a lasting impression on so many, especially the young architects who were fortunate to work with him.

I´ll never forget the holiday eggnog Lewis made-one cup was all it took which made hike very happy! Those memories will always stay with me.

With deepest sympathy,
Allen Post and family.

Dear, dear Beth,
Bubba and I are so saddened by the loss of our wonderful friend, Lewis. We have so many happy memories with the two of you in Charleston, Atlanta, and Paris. He loved all of you, but Beth, he loved you the most, and you were the reason he was able to be with us so long. Thank you for making sure we were able to have many fun and delightful times together. We hope to come for the funeral, but are not driving too much these days, so we pray we can work it out.
Much love to you and your whole family,
Cynthia & Bubba

Beautiful obit for a beautiful man

I will never forget my 4 years, being the receptionist at Nix Mann & Associates. Lewis' office was directly behind the front desk, and he was truly one of the loveliest humans I have ever met. He always treated me with respect and understanding, never had a cross or harsh word. Even his family was extremely kind to me, when they would visit or call him. I have the BEST memories of working there. Everything from his gracious nature (he brought me back some perfume from one of his trips to Paris) to his humor, which gelled so wonderfully with my, at times, quirky sense of humor. I remember him at Christmas, in the big conference room, making eggnog in a big silver bowl. I remember his infectious smile and laugh. I remember him dashing to the airport to catch a flight, just an hour before its departure, never missing a trip. I remember - him. The world will be a sadder place without you. May you rest in peace, you dear, dear man.

Lewis was a natural teacher, with a remarkable affinity for both beauty and business. His combination of high design standards, a supportive attitude, and a great sense of humor helped set the tone for the office. Lewis emphasized client service foremost, advising us as young Architects to "Listen first, then Lead." The environment that Lewis and the NMA partners fostered at 1382 Peachtree is simply irreplaceable. I feel so deeply fortunate to have been a part of that era - that moment - in the Atlanta Architecture community.
Sincere condolences to all of the extended Nix family. Peace, Lewis.

My first memory of Lewis was when I entered the front doorway of the Nix Mann house on Ptree at 7:00am. I persistently called him until he gave me an interview and he agreed to meet me early. I am glad that I finally irritated him enough to hire me. My four years at Nix Mann felt like a doctorate degree in learning the architectural practice via the very unique lens provide at NMA. Great design, much fun and camaraderie and life long memories all fostered by a leadership that I feel so fortunate to have experienced. I always knew I could walk into Lewis's office at any time and have a meaningful conversation. Rest in peace Lewis knowing you have impacted so many in such a positive way.
