Chesterfield, SC — Mr. J.B. Campbell, age 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 17, 2024. A graveside service will be held at Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 4:00 PM, officiated by Brent Taylor. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Miller- Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

 

Mr. Campbell was born on September 19, 1926, in Chesterfield County, SC, to the late Nick Paulie Campbell, Sr. and Leo Davidson Campbell. He was the second eldest of twelve children. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines on August 1, 1944, serving aboard the U.S.A.H.S. "Marigold" as a Third Cook.

 

Subsequently, Mr. Campbell joined the United States Army on October 4, 1946, and honorably served until his discharge on March 22, 1952, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan) for his service.

 

A dedicated community member, Mr. Campbell was a Past Commander of American Legion Post 134 and an honorary lifetime member of the Ruby – Mt. Croghan Volunteer Fire Department after twenty years of service. He was a longstanding member of Shiloh Methodist Church, where he was raised, and also cherished his time attending Elizabeth Baptist Church in Ruby, SC, where he formed lasting friendships.

 

Retiring from Branch Motor Line, Mr. Campbell continued to drive for Rivers Plumbing & Electric, proudly maintaining his CDL license well into his nineties. He was a loving family man, deeply proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed reminiscing about his upbringing on the farm and raising cattle.

 

One of his most cherished experiences was participating in the Honor Flight for World War II veterans alongside his brother, Melvin.

 

Mr. Campbell is preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Bryan Campbell; his second wife of 34 years, Evelyn Adams Campbell; his daughter, Jackie Jenkins; son-in-law, Rob Jenkins; son, Jerry B. Campbell; daughter-in-law, Theresa M. Campbell; son, Johnny Ingram; as well as brother Eugene Campbell and sisters Patricia Teal, Mavis Thompson, Beatrice Burch, and Anita Quick.

 

He is survived by his grandchildren, Skip Jenkins, Ashton Jenkins, Caroline (Brandon) Faulkenberry, John (Tascha) Ingram, Angelia (Dwayne) Cook, Brianna Polson, and Chris Adams; great-grandchildren, DeLaney Westbury, Eli Faulkenberry, Jacob Faulkenberry, Samantha Faulkenberry, Colin  Adams, Andrew Cook, Aden Cook, and Addie Cook; daughters-in-law, Corky Ingram, and Mary Beth Hecker;  siblings, Melvin Campbell of Elgin, Paulie (Frances) Campbell of Chesterfield, Glenn (Brenda) Campbell of Hartsville; as well as sisters Janice Rivers of Chesterfield, Sue Holloman of Hartsville, Linda (John) Prohaska of West Chester, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ruby – Mt. Croghan VFD, P.O. Box 8, Mt. Croghan, SC 29727, or to the American Legion, P.O. Box 385, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
