J. Edward Roney, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 17 to Oct. 22, 2023.
John Edward Roney, Jr., 93 a long time resident of Cataumet, MA passed away at All American Assisted Living at Wrentham on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023. "Ed" was born in Detroit, MI and was the son of John Edward Roney, Sr. and Amanda Hesse. He was predeceased by his sister, Joan A. Maas, and survived by his sister Sally A. Kennedy of Boston, MA.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Martha Savage and three children, Jeffrey T. Roney and his wife Karen Fisher from Scottsville, VA, Jennifer R. Dexter and her husband Terry J. Dexter from Fitzwilliam, NH, and Jay E. Roney and his wife Lisa Burpee from Boca Raton, FL. He leaves behind five Grandchildren (Steven Roney and his wife Kara, Carolyn Roney and her husband Philip Smith, Andrew Dexter and his wife Nicole, Amanda Dexter, and Allison Roney) as well as four great grandchildren (Thacher Roney, Sutton Roney, Sloan Smith, and Olivia Dexter). Poppy was a caring father and will be forever missed.

Ed earned his marketing degree from University of Detroit in 1953 and served in the Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955. Upon returning to Detroit, he joined the brokerage firm his family founded, Roney & Co., which was the start of a lifelong career that spanned decades at Goldman Sachs, North American Management Company, as well as his own firm, Roney Capital Management.

In line with his passions, he gave back to the local communities by actively participating in causes that were near and dear to him. He was the Treasurer of the Meadowbrook School in Weston, MA, the President of the Cataumet Club in Bourne, MA, and a Trustee of the New England Aquarium.

The door of the Cataumet house was always open and welcoming. Family and friends would be celebrated as Ed would grill his famous butterfly leg of lamb or steam a tub of lobsters. Regardless, they were always "the best ever". Ed enjoyed working on projects in the basement, gardening, skiing, bowling at the Weston Golf Club, and participating in Power Squadron events. Day trips to the Vineyard and Cuttyhunk, as well as some fishing, were always an adventure and talked about for years.

Ed Travelled the world with Martha, and a host of friends, which found them as far south as the Galapagos to explore or due north to Churchill, Canada to see polar bears. Adventures in Europe, Africa, and India brightened his life and made for unforgettable shared memories.
