Patrick Carty Obituary

Patrick Joseph Carty was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven on December 8, 2025. Born in Detroit on June 6, 1942, Pat is reunited with his parents Michael and Mary Jane Carty, his eldest sister, Peggy, and his cousin and sister by heart, Mary (Chris). Pat is survived by his loving wife Debbie, his sisters Judy (Ed) and Maureen (Stan), and his children, Sean (Kim), Wendy (Rob), and Katie (Bryan). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Michael, Daniel (Hannah), Meghan, Nia, Devin, and Fox.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Pat most loved spending quality time with his family. His favorite moments were when the family was gathered together, whether celebrating birthdays or holidays, traveling for vacations, or simply enjoying drop-in weekend visits. He was a constant companion to Debbie, supporting her both at home and in her career and accompanying her on numerous travels and conferences throughout the years, forming friendships wherever they went. Pat was a steadfast supporter for Sean, Wendy, and Katie, uplifting their achievements and providing help any time they were in need. Pat was most proud of his grandchildren, regaling all those he knew with his favorite stories and proudest moments of Michael, Daniel, Meghan, Nia, Devin, and Fox. His legacy will continue to live on as they carry their own stories of him with them throughout their lives.

Born to an Irish Catholic family, Pat was a lifelong devout Catholic, and in his childhood attended St. Clement church and school, where he was active as an altar server. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School and later attended University of Detroit for both college and law school. A proud member of the State Bar of Michigan, Pat began practicing law in 1967, first at Hudson’s Department Store in Detroit, then entering private practice at Poole, Klask & Carty, and finally building his career from staff attorney to General Counsel for the Oakland County Road Commission from 1977 until his retirement in 2014, after which he continued the work he loved as a legal consultant. His legal career was marked by numerous awards and achievements, and he is remembered for the countless people he helped and lives he bettered through his steadfast work.

A lifelong fan of Detroit Tigers baseball, Pat never missed watching a game, and could often be heard exuberantly giving advice to the players through the television screen, no doubt a holdover from his early years of coaching Sean’s youth baseball team. An avid reader, Pat’s favorite place was in his armchair with a coffee and Reese’s peanut butter cup, a dog or two at his feet, and a book in his hand. He could always produce the perfect quote from his vast wealth of literary knowledge at just the right moment in conversation. His prolific storytelling ability and witty humor were hallmarks of his proud Irish heritage and captivated anyone who had the pleasure of chatting with him. These were matched by his caring, steady advice whenever a thoughtful listening ear or shoulder to lean on was needed. Pat will always be remembered as the pillar and patriarch of the Carty family and his spirit will live within our hearts forever.

Visitation for Pat will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025 from 3:00-8:00pm, with recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00pm at Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, located at 280 S Main Street Plymouth, Michigan.

All expressions of sympathy, including cards or flowers, may be sent to Schrader-Howell Funeral Home.
