J. Gale Roberts, age 82, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025.
Gale was born on February 25 in Jackson, Mississippi, to the late Rubye and Leroy Lonnie. She was a proud graduate of Lanier High School in Jackson and continued her education at Utica Junior College in Utica, Mississippi.
After completing her studies, Gale moved to Chicago, where she met fellow Mississippian John H. Roberts. The two were united in marriage in August 1963 and shared 25 wonderful years together until John’s passing in June 1989.
From this loving union came four children - Taunja M. Roberts-Belgrave, Kelvin Roberts, Eric D. Roberts, and John P. Roberts - who were the greatest joys of her life. To know Gale was to know a devoted mother whose love, strength, and faith shaped her family and everyone blessed to know her.
Gale also had a rich professional life. She worked for five years as an Administrative Assistant at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine before discovering her true calling as a teacher and teaching assistant at Evangelical Christian School in Chicago. Her warmth, patience, and compassion touched the lives of countless students over the years.
Above all, Gale loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her deep faith was evident throughout nearly 50 years of faithful membership at Calvary Baptist Church of Chicago, under the leadership of her beloved pastor and “brother,” Rev. Dr. Alfloyd Butler. There she served faithfully - teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and giving her time and heart to numerous ministries and committees.
She now joins in eternal rest her husband, John H. Roberts; her son, Eric D. Roberts; her mother, Rubye Bryant-Brakefield; her sisters, Annie L. Grantham and Connie Davis-Conwell; and her niece and nephew, Saundra Treadwell and Benoy Grantham.
Gale’s memory will forever be cherished by her children - Taunja Roberts-Belgrave (Duane Belgrave), Kelvin Roberts (Lesley Roberts), and John P. Roberts; her grandchildren - Duane Belgrave Jr., Desmond Belgrave, Allison Roberts, Dakarai Belgrave, and Eric L. Roberts; her sisters - Linda and Jackie; and a host of nieces and nephews, Ken, Kendra, Janean, Reagan, Brian, Byron, Shameka, great-nieces and nephews and many others. She also leaves behind countless extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.
Gale Roberts will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her boundless love for her family, her gentle humor, and her steadfast spirit. Her life was a reflection of God’s grace, and her legacy of kindness, wisdom, and devotion will continue to live on in all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 2309 East 80th Street, Chicago, IL 60617 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday November 15th, 2025.
