J. Clyde "Jay" Miller III, passed away from metastatic liver cancer in Pittsburgh on September 30, 2025, at age 87. Born June 14, 1938 to J. Clyde Miller Jr. and Helen Evelyn Upton Miller, Jay graduated in 1956 from Homestead High School in his hometown of Homestead, PA. He attended Grove City College, Grove City, PA.
As an Army veteran, he served with the 107th Field Artillery, 28th Division in the Continental USA (1960-1966).
Jay loved advertising and marketing, an "unboring" career; from working at Pittsburgh Brewing Company to U.S. Steel Corporation, as well as advertising agencies serving clients in four states. He enjoyed promoting a variety of products ranging from a goldfish farm, a commuter airline, and financial clients such as banks and savings and loan associations, automotive products such as a car battery manufacturer, and Quaker State Oil. Jay wrote and produced TV and radio commercials, flyers and brochures, created marketing plans and handled special events for his clients.
He was an enthusiastic competitor in autocross and Sports Car Club of America racing for many years, and maintained an interest in bonsai until his death, having killed many "teeny trees" during his obsession. He co-authored The Pittsburgh Bonsai Society newsletter for thirteen years. Jay spent his childhood summers at the Miller Cottage in Van Buren Bay, on Lake Erie, near Dunkirk, New York, and continued making memories there throughout his lifetime. Jay was widely regarded as a "nice guy", praised for his genuine warmth and compassion for everyone. He often produced witty remarks, jokes and clever responses on the spot at the right moment.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, his paternal aunt, Ruth Miller Brierly, his brother, Robert Willis Brierly Miller, and former wife Sally Ann Maybury Miller. He leaves his beloved partner, Joyce Brown Dodge; children J. Clyde "Todd" Miller IV (Karen Roura), daughter Kerry Miller-Beck (Robert J. Beck), granddaughters Lyndsey Miller and Callie Beck, grandsons Ryan James Hartley Beck, and Nathan Michael Miller, and an ever-diminishing group of old friends in Pittsburgh and Van Buren Bay and Point.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Bridges Hospice. Success begins with a great team! A big thank you to your fabulous employees.
