In Loving Memory of Dr. Paul Allen Edwards (1945 – 2025)
Paul Allen Edwards was born on February 10, 1945, in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, to his father Demetrius ("Metro") and mother Ann. He was the oldest of three children and is survived by his sister, Patricia Kassling and brother-in-law, Bill, sister Joyce Poole and brother-in-law, Gregg, brother-in-law, Keith Kennedy, and several nieces and nephews.
Paul graduated from Butler High School after spending his initial years in Worthington, PA. During that time, he lettered in basketball and excelled at playing trumpet for the school band. Paul would then go on to attend and graduate from Grove City College as a pre-med major. There, he became a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Phi fraternity.
While at Grove City. when Paul visited the nearby Slippery Rock College campus one weekend night, he met the love of his life while at a dance. He unabashedly approached and invited Ellen Kennedy to dance with him, beginning a three-year courtship that ultimately led to more than 56 years of marriage.
Paul earned a DMD and PhD at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
From there, he joined the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country for 30 years and established a successful career as a maxillofacial head and neck pathologist. He also achieved the rank of full-bird colonel before retiring from military service in 2007.
Paul became known and respected for being a dedicated and outstanding tennis player and helped coach a high school tennis team. He was also a lover of food, reading, sports, traveling, animals, playing Scrabble, old-time television, educational programming, and the arts. Though Paul was typically quiet and reserved in social situations, he was deeply loyal to people he loved and cared about, particularly family members and longtime close friends.
Paul was a believer and follower of Jesus Christ and regularly made church attendance and Bible study a part of his life. He took part in a mission trip with his wife to Uganda and even visited Israel in 2018 to become baptized in the Dead Sea.
Upon receiving an official diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, Paul agreed to donate his brain after death for scientific examination in hopes that a potential medical breakthrough may emerge and help others affected by this cruel disease.
Paul passed away peacefully in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, on the afternoon of September 21, 2025. He is survived by his wife Ellen; two sons, Paul and Jonathan; daughter-in-law Danielle; and three grandchildren, Eliana, Lucas, and William.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone who wishes to make a contribution in Paul's memory please direct your donation to a hospice care facility or to an animal care shelter, such as Animal Friends in Pittsburgh. A celebration of life service will be forthcoming in November 2025.
