Madawaska--- J. Gilbert Roy, 82, passed peacefully in his sleep November 22, 2025, in the house that he built. He was born February 9, 1943, in St. David, a son of the late David and Irene (Hodgson) Roy.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Assembly, Madawaska, a retired volunteer firefighter, and a life member of the American Legion, Post #147. Gil was also a founding member and volunteer at the Four Seasons Trail Association.

Gilbert enlisted with the US Army in 1961, during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable service overseas, he returned to his beloved St. John Valley, where he worked at former Fraser Paper, now Twin Rivers, as a steamfitter/pipefitter for over 34 years, until his retirement. He was a well-known employee which earned him the respect of many coworkers and friends.

Gilbert is survived one son, Brian (Michelle) Roy of Madawaska, and one daughter, Cindy Kivler of Pownal; five grandchildren: Elizabeth "Liz" Laplante, Megan (Ethan Saville) Roy, Alex Roy, Noah Kivler, and Hal Kivler, and one great granddaughter Sophie.

Besides his parents, Gilbert was predeceased by his beloved wife of 52 years, Jacqueline "Kiki" (Michaud) Roy, in 2019, and an infant brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday, December 15, 2025, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Madawaska. Relatives and friends may greet the family Monday morning 8:30 – 9:30 AM at Lajoie Funeral Home, 114 – 10th Ave., Madawaska. Spring interment will be in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gil's name may be made to Four Seasons Trail Assoc. at www.fourseasonstrail.org.
