J Scott Shirley, 58, of Columbia, S.C., died unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep on Friday, February 13, 2026. A man of exceptional wit and a sharp legal mind, Scott’s "wicked awesome" sense of humor and generous spirit leave an indelible hole in the hearts of everyone lucky enough to know him. Scott was one of a kind, a man who fought for people and cared deeply for his clients. He loved without reservation. If he loved you, there was nothing he would not do for you.
Born in Exeter, New Hampshire on October 2, 1967, Scott never lost his New England roots. He was an avid Boston Red Sox (and all other Boston teams) fan and a lifelong sports enthusiast, rarely missing a hockey, baseball, or rugby match. Beyond the stadium, he found his greatest joy in travel with his wife, Georgia Anna, and simple relaxation. He was happiest when in the water—whether it was a lake, ocean, pool or hot tub—always with a book in hand. Scott was constantly learning; being around him meant you would learn something new and would always laugh. Rain or shine, Scott was often seen walking, backpack on, wrapped in a colorful scarf. More than once Scott was referred to as a “cool dude.”
Scott graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1990 before moving to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law, graduating in 1998. With an undergraduate degree in Art History, Scott’s love of art was a true passion. As a founding member of the law firm of Popowski & Shirley, he was a respected advocate and a pillar of the local legal community for nearly three decades. Practicing law wasn’t just a job for him. Scott felt responsible for his clients and worked tirelessly on their behalf.
As the community reflects on his life, they celebrate a man whose presence made a difference and whose memory will be cherished for years to come. Outside of his law practice, Scott was a beloved fixture at Henry’s, where his laughter and storytelling were legendary. Above all, he was a devoted husband, a loving uncle, and a dedicated godfather who cherished his family and the many lives he touched.
Scott is survived by his wife, Georgia Anna Mitchell; his father, Allen Thomas Shirley of Jalisco, Mexico; and his brother, Jonathan Charles Shirley, of Pupukea, Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Knowles Shirley.
His memory will be cherished by his extended family, including his mother-in-law, Cabell Carrington Mitchell, sister-in-law, Helen Mitchell Hammond (Michael); brother-in-law, Stephen Carrington Mitchell (Dede); and his nephews, Stephen Carrington Mitchell, Jr. (Samantha), Edward Buist Mitchell, and George Wells Mitchell. He also leaves behind a host of beloved cousins, extended family members, and friends who became family.
Scott’s life will be celebrated in a Memorial Service at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
