J. Merced Tobias

J. Merced Tobias passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on November 19, 2025, in his
home, surrounded by his children and his two loyal dogs.
Merced was born on September 24, 1949, in his hometown of Cerritos, San Luis Potosí,
Mexico, to the late Romana and Pascual Tobias. The youngest of ten children, he was known
for his strong work ethic, his generous spirit, and his deep appreciation for life.
In his youth, Merced worked alongside his brothers as an albañil. The craftsmanship of the
Tobias brothers can still be found in the schools, homes, and buildings throughout our beloved
Cerritos. In time, Merced met and fell in love with his soulmate, Maria Esbelta Reyes. Together,
they made the life-changing decision to leave Cerritos and journey to the United States in
search of better opportunities for their growing family.
During his years in the United States, Merced built a fulfilling career at CPS Energy, where he
dedicated 25 years of service before retiring after the passing of his devoted wife. In the
peaceful years of his retirement, he found joy in spending time with his family, tending to small
projects around his home and traveling back to his beloved hometown. He greeted each
God-given day with a smile. Merced was a loving man and the pillar of his family, whose uplifting
presence brought warmth, joy, and wisdom to all who knew him.
Merced leaves to cherish his memory his five children-Alejandro Tobias, Maritsa Tobias, Erica
Tobias-Garcia, Roberto Tobias, and Angelica Gonzalez-along with nine beautiful, lively
grandchildren and one vibrant great-granddaughter. He has left footsteps we will forever follow.
