Joseph Douglas Wight
September 15, 1930 – March 15, 2025
Joseph Douglas "Doug" Wight, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather, uncle, and community leader, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Doug was born on September 15, 1930, in
Brigham City, Utah, to Irving Joseph and Ruth Haws Wight.
Doug had an adventurous childhood, growing up through the Great Depression and World War II. His father was a fish and game warden and caretaker of the emergency airport in Locomotive Springs, Utah. It was an isolated, but exciting existence in Locomotive Springs for his family, and he and his sisters would live with their grandparents in Brigham City during the school year. The family later moved to Salt Lake City where Doug attended Granite High School before joining the Navy at the age of 17.
Doug honorably served his country in the Navy from 1947 to 1956, where he was stationed in Maryland, Florida, and California. Doug received his honorable discharge from the Navy as a Photographer's Mate First Class, specializing in aerial photography. It was during his time in the Navy that he met and married the love of his life, Kathryn, at the Naval Air Station Chapel at Patuxent River, Maryland, on March 17, 1951. Their union was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.
After his naval service, Doug and Kathryn returned to Utah, where Doug embarked on a distinguished career at Thiokol. Doug was hired in 1957 and was the company's 23rd employee, where he utilized the skills he acquired in the Navy to become one of the pioneers of high-speed photography in the aerospace industry. After a combined 30 years of photography in the Navy and at Thiokol, Doug transitioned to management and served in leadership positions until his retirement in 1995 as the Director of Quality Assurance for the Strategic Division. While working full-time, Doug completed his education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Management from Weber State University and an MBA from Utah State University.
Doug was dedicated to public service and made significant contributions to Brigham City, serving three terms on the City Council, four years as chairman of the Planning Commission, and 10 years on the Bear River Water Conservancy District. He also served on the Brigham City Board of Adjustments and the Brigham City Golf Course Commission. Doug generously volunteered with the Utah Golf Association for over 20 years as a golf course rater and rules official.
Doug was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served callings in the High Council and Bishopric. He was also a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.
Doug is survived by his children: Chris (Nadine) Wight, Debbie (George) Yates, Cyn Valentine, Dianna Wight, Vicki (Terry) Baddley, Curt (Shanel) Wight, Valerie (Mark) Keller, and Jason (Karrie) Wight. He leaves behind an enduring legacy with 26 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Doug was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 71 years: Kathryn Thurza Young Wight; his son: Joseph Clark Wight; sisters: Ruth Geneal (George William) Fowler and Julia (Judy) (Mitch) Mitchell.
Doug will be remembered for his integrity, his dedication to his profession and community, his joy of learning, and his unconditional love for his family. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Gables in Brigham City and McKayla Cannon from Aegis Home Health & Hospice for their loving care.
