Jack Birmingham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of Alaska - Anchorage on Apr. 29, 2024.
Jack Birmingham passed away March 28, 2024 with his family by his side.
He was the husband of Paula Birmingham, and they shared almost 41
years of marriage together.
Jack was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, the son of Grant and Janet
Birmingham. He was graduated from high school in Baltimore and later
from the University of California, Berkley earning a bachelor's degree in
mechanical engineering and juris doctorate from the Berkley School of Law.
Jack was drafted into military service in 1966 and was honorably
discharged in 1970. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in
1969 for his extraordinary heroism in the Vietnam War. Jack was also
awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver and Bronze Star and
other military medals. He will be buried at Fort Richardson National
Cemetery.
More than anything else, Jack thoroughly enjoyed the annual deer hunt in
Kodiak with his son and close friends. He loved everything about hunting;
from planning the hunt with various and sundry checklists, successfully
finishing the hunt and butchering his own meat in the kitchen at home. Jack
loved fishing, camping and generally any outdoor activity – as long as it
was in Alaska; particularly any activity that involved doing things with guns,
rifles and fishing poles.
Jack never met a stranger and made many friends over the years wherever
he went. He was always interested in how and what other people were
doing and shared many stories with those he met.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Paula, son Grant,
sisters Kitty and Anne, his brother Bill, sisters in-law Cathi (Steve) and
Susan (Steve), his nieces Rebecca and Janet, and his many friends.
A memorial service and celebration of Jack's life is planned for June 2,
2024, 2-5 pm at the Viking Hall. Please join us in celebrating this
extraordinary man.

Mr. Birmingham was one of the nicest, most honest souls I ever met. From his soft side to his "hard man" and his work ethic was outstanding. I am sad to hear of his passing last year. He gave me advice in life that I still practice today. He was a Winner, and a Warrior. He loved his Family. His Humor was second to none. God Bless you, Jack.

One extra special time, long ago, I remember asking to go along on a hike with "the guys" during a lunch break at a board meeting in Juneau. It was winter, lots of dry snow on the ground and we drove out the road to the MatSu glacier. Norm, Dick, Jack and me. I was in "skirt" work clothes, a borrowed jacket and low heels, and definitely ill-prepared for the easy hike. The wonderment of that day has never left me. As I struggled and lagged behind, I heard the sounds of birds ahead, calling to one another. Unbelievable chattering sounds in the extremely cold air (below zero) although the sun was shining and a heavy, dry mist arose from the ground. The birds kept chattering like a noisy playground at a school yard. But there weren´t any birds to be seen! Just these amazing men "talking" in bird language - calling out to one another. They had allowed me a glimpse into their perfect world. Truly music to all ears and a moment frozen in time - never ever forgotten.

For Paula and Grant:
Jack - a red, white and true-blue American helicopter pilot and lawyer! Until recently, as our country seems on the brink of something huge - I am reminded of the significance of the bond of friendship and camaraderie Jack held with others who helped lead AACA "back-in-the-day". Aviation leaders by first name - John H. and Bob H., Dick, Orin, Bob Ens., Grant, Bill, Larry, Cindy, Jerry, Bob J. and Bob Eng., and many others - shared with gusto, wartime military service and Alaska commercial flying experiences with one another - bonded by the commonality of love for aviation, dedication to flying safety, and love for country. Jack was like a big brother to me, always thoughtful, kind and sincere in helping me understand a complicated industry. He was a devoted husband first, and loved his family far beyond everything else - boasting often (around the board room table) of Paula´s building projects and Grant´s "smarts" and quick wit! He was, and always will be, a mighty American hero in my eyes. Rest well dear friend... most certainly yours was a life well-lived.

One time fishing on Theodore creek I found myself on a steep bear trail up a bank of thick alder brush. Right at the top and about 2 feet away I heard a very loud WOOF!!!! It was Jack with a superb Imation. Over the years I found a few times to get even with him. Truly a treasured friend
