Jack Leroy Broom

Jack Broom passed peacefully on the evening of January 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. 

Jack was born in Amarillo, TX on March 26, 1933, to Roscoe and Nina Mae Broom. He was the second born child, first born son, to a family that would go on to have 5 more children. Independent from early on, Jack was able to buy his first car at the age of 13 in Groom, TX for $100. He drove it back to Amarillo down the historic Hwy 66, at nighttime, with two broken headlights; spearheading his love to take things that were broken and fix them up like new. When he wasn’t working with his hands, he was with family and friends at Amarillo High. He enlisted in the Army at age 20 and served in the 114th Signal Platoon as a Corporal in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and then went on to serve in the National Guard Reserves. 

After his service, he got a job at VL Taylor fabricating EVAP coolers, but the real prize from that job was meeting the young secretary that worked there named, Yvetta. They were married only 6 weeks later in 1958. Jack and Yvetta would happily welcome two sons; Ricky in 1959 and Randy in 1963. He strived to provide for his family, teach his boys right from wrong, and always show his love by lending a helping hand. 

Jack wasn’t a stranger to hard work and would later take a job at US Zinc Co. Smelter where he worked during the day and would then go on to drive a cab during the night. Later on, he would start his own dump truck business hauling sand, gravel, and dirt and would keep that running successfully for 34 years. He also put his talent to work by purchasing the tractors from 18 wheelers, stretching the frames, and turning them into dump trucks to sell for profit. In his downtime, one of his frequent hobbies was taking old, broken lawnmowers apart and figuring out how to fix them. His talent for mechanics knew no bounds and his selflessness was always on display as he tackled the jobs that needed to be done. 

His generosity, ice cream treats, fishing and mountains trips will always be great memories for his family. Jack was always willing to help his children with any project they were working on. He would call and ask what are you doing and after they told him about the project, he would say “Okay, I am on my way!” This was Jack to a T! 

He is preceded in death by his wife, Yvetta Broom, his father, William “Roscoe” Broom, his mother, Nina Mae Broom, his brothers, Don Broom, Ted Broom, and Johnny Broom, and his sisters, Geroldine Thompson, Vernelle Grimes, and JoAnn Broom. 

Jack is survived by his sons, Ricky Broom; Randy Broom and wife, Brenda; his granddaughters, Melissa Berg and husband, Jeremy; Diedra Troutman and husband; Mason; Misty Homen; Jodi Crow and husband, Casey; Malorie Zimmer and husband; Ryan; his grandsons, Jaron Broom; Dru Broom; Dustin Broom and wife, Ashley; Devon Broom and wife, Jill; Justin Homen; Chris Homen; his 22 great-grandchildren; and his 1 great-great-grandchild. 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A service will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Schooler Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at Llano Cemetary.
